Atherstone Town 1-1 Paget Rangers

The Bears brought home a well-earned point from a tough looking trip to high-flying Atherstone Town

Paget Rangers claimed a well-earned point in atrocious conditions at fourth placed Atherstone Town on Saturday.

It was the hosts who started the brightest and after just three minutes the Adders could have taken the lead, Shorthouse firing his effort over the bar.

Paget then had a fortuitous chance to take the lead as a clearance from a back-pass by Atherstone keeper, McNulty, cannoned off Daniel Carter and onto the Adders post, with the keeper stranded.

After 15 minutes, Atherstone had the ball in the net, Harris outpacing the Paget defence and crossing for McNaughton who fired the ball into the net only to see his effort ruled out for offside by linesman Mark Chester.

On 22 minutes, McNaughton went down in the Paget box under very minimal contact and was cautioned for his theatrics as the Bears now began to gain more of a foothold in the game.

On 41 minutes, the Bears took the lead, some neat passing play and movement found Dempster in space, who beat two Atherstone defenders before firing low beyond McNulty and into the bottom corner.

Within three minutes of the second half restart, Paget should’ve doubled their lead, Daniel Carter skipping past a host of Atherstone defenders before dragging his effort wide.

On the hour mark, Atherstone were level, Mark Williams lost the ball in midfield on an increasingly difficult pitch, and Harris blasted a fierce 20-yard effort which was parried by Paget ‘keeper Benton as far as Alex Naughton. Naughton, held up the ball well before passing back across the six-yard box to Harris who tapped home into an unguarded net.

The rest of the match was dominated by the two defences, but it was Paget who had the final chance of the match in stoppage time. A Dean Morris free-kick from 30 yards which was pushed around the post by McNulty in the Adders goal.
