A debut goal from Keegan Woolley sees the Bears progress to the 2nd Round of the Polymac Packaging League Cup

Paget Rangers progressed into the second round of the Polymac Packaging League Cup thanks to a hard fought single goal victory against a tough Lye Town team. A Bears’ team that had eight changes from the team that had beaten Brocton showed character and commitment to overcome a team from the division above them.

In a first half of few goal chances Jack Till caused the Bears’ defence a few problems but Josh Benton in the Paget goal was rarely troubled. Paget lost Matthias Blake to injury but Mark Williams came off the bench to put in another powerful performance. Myles Phipps was lively up front but Ben Roberts saved the few chances that came the way of Phipps and Troy Baker.

Paget brought on Callum Mallett at half time to strengthen the defence but he was only on the pitch for 6 minutes before suffering a broken leg. The Bears were undeterred and began to get on top of the midfield battles. Baker shot over twice when well placed whilst the Paget defence kept an increasingly frustrated Lye front line at bay. The only goal of the game came on 82 minutes. After the Lye defence had failed to clear after a goalmouth scramble the ball fell to debutant Keegan Woolley who swept the ball high into the Lye goal.

The Bears then had to weather a series of Lye attacks including several corners when Ben Roberts went up to try to force an equaliser and a penalty shootout. In the last minute Benton saved a goal bound shot to preserve the Bears’ lead and almost immediately the referee blew for full time. Paget’s fourth successive victory gives them an away tie at landlords Boldmere St. Michaels in the second round which promises to be a cracking local derby.
