Match Report: Paget Rangers 2-1 Coton Green

3 weeks ago By Joshua Smith

Paget Rangers are promoted to Division One.

Paget Rangers were promoted to MFL Division 1 after a tense 98 minutes in Boldmere.

A 2-1 win over Coton Green sprung the Bears into second place, but it didn't come easy.

The Bears were on the attack from the get go, Billy Fagg played Daniel Carter through but his low shot was saved. A Coton Green counter attack showed the intent of the visitors.

Just over five minutes played a Rio tackle prevented a promising Coton attack, it was obvious the visitors were here to spoil the party.

Paget finally took the lead after nine minutes when Fagg dispossessed the Green left back, before sending a low cross into Carter who chipped it into the net.

Green were still looking to prevent a Paget promotion party, and Josh Sherrington forced Paget keeper, Josh Benton, to make a great save to keep the Bears in the lead.

It was the Bears who would score next; Jeorge Smith played the ball down the right to Fagg, who brilliantly crossed it into the path of Ross Dempster who headed the ball past the hapless Coton goalkeeper.

The visitors were persistent and in the 23rd minute the referee awarded a suspect free kick, Dave Yonwin stepped up and halved the Bears lead.

Paget were relentless in their attempt to regain their two goal lead. Dempster, Smith, Carter, Luke Bradley and Craig Evans all had chances but the score remained 2-1 going into the break.

What followed were 51 tense minutes. The Bears struggled to create the perfect chance that would give them a third and Green were still going for the equaliser.

With 90 minutes approaching it looked like the Wee Gers were going to do it, however six minutes remained on the ref’s watch.

A free kick and a few corners for Coton provided a nerve wracking ending for the Paget staff, players and of course fans.

The referee finally blew the whistle after the Green goalkeeper sent the all into the air from a goal kick and the celebrations could begin.

Watch the goals here.
