A hat-trick from stand-in striker Ryan Conlon secures victory for the Bears on the road.

Paget Rangers returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Nuneaton Griff last Saturday. A hat-trick by stand-in striker Ryan Conlon earned the Bears a welcome three points to move them up the Division One table.

After an untidy opening to the game Billy Fagg fired over after a strong run from midfield. Then Conlon had an appeal for a penalty turned down as Paget began to get on top. The opening goal came after 14 minutes when Conlon chased a hopeful punt upfield, the home keeper Woodward dropped the ball and the Paget striker swept the ball into the empty net. Conlon then fouled the keeper as he sought a second goal whilst Paget keeper Josh Benton saved a close range shot on 24 minutes to preserve the Bears’ lead. Danny Carter forced Woodward into a save before he headed just wide from Liam Norris’ cross. Griff failed to capitalise on a Mallett mistake as their forward headed just wide before Conlon doubled Paget’s lead on 38 minutes when he side footed home after an exchange of passes with Carter. Norris then played Carter in but the Paget striker shot just wide. Benton made a save on the stroke of half-time to ensure the Bears remained two goals up at the interval.

It didn’t take long to Conlon to complete his hat-trick at the start of the second half. Latching on to a through ball by Fagg, he calmly slotted the ball under Woodward to extend the Bears’ lead on 48 minutes. After Fagg had shot wide, Benton saved Tullins’ header from a corner before Griff fired a free-kick over following handball by Williams. Fagg played in Carter who hit the side-netting as the Bears’ sought more goals. Griff continued to try to get back into the game and Colley saw his shot deflected on to a post and Benton had to make two saves during a goalmouth scramble to preserve the clean sheet. Woodward then saved from Carter after good work by Gasiewski and Conlon headed off the goal line after a dangerous Griff corner. In the final action Tullins shot a free-kick into the Paget wall after a foul by Williams.

A welcome morale boosting victory for the Bears before two tough home games against Wolverhampton Casuals in the FA Vase (Friday September 8th) and Brocton in the league (Saturday September 16th).
