Paget Rangers crashed down to earth after a 7-2 win away to Pershore Town with a home defeat to second place Ilkeston Town on Easter Monday.
The Bears got off to a terrible start conceding in only the second minute when Malachi Lavelle-Moore unleashed an unstoppable volley at the Paget goal.
Moments later Jack Gibson intercepted a poor pass from the Ilkeston goalkeeper, attempting a long chip that went wide. Ross Dempster also had chances early on, and the game may have played out differently if the Wee Gers had managed to grab that early equaliser, instead the early lead allowed the visitors to play with less pressure which suited them well.
Following an offside goal from Lavelle-Moore and another chance denied by the head of Dean Morris, Ilkeston finally doubled their lead with the less than 10 minutes until half-time when Ben Fairclough headed in a cross from Bill Bennett.
The Wee Gers would concede again on the cusp of half-time when Fairclough found the net for the second time.
In the opening exchanges of the second half both Dempster and Gibson had chances as the duo forced the Town goalkeeper to make a double save. Just three minutes later Lavelle-Moore headed in to increase the visitors’ lead to four.
With the game all but over Paget’s only aim was to reduce the deficit and score a consolation goal, which came in the dying minutes of the game when substitute Zach Brown volleyed the ball home.
