Clarke Steals Points For Wood
Paget crashed to a last minute defeat against title favourites Walsall Wood
Paget Rangers 2-3 Walsall Wood
Paget Rangers suffered injury heartbreak as league leaders Walsall Wood scored at the death to snatch the three points in a game where Paget thoroughly deserved at least a share of the spoils.
Paget started the brighter, first seeing Gibson denied by McFarlane after Carter had centred from a run down the right, before on 7 minutes Mark Williams saw his shot go high and wide after the ball had rebounded to him following an unconvincing Walsall Wood clearance.
On 12 minutes the visitors had their first real chance of the game; a right-win run and cross by Lee Butler was cut out by the impressive Rioual Kousseba-Bakala in the Paget defence before Sam Agar could pounce.
On 24 minutes Lemaar Rhule found Daniel Carter who was crucially tackled by Hurren before Paget had the next chance, Billy Fagg and Carter combining well on the edge of the box before finding Jack Gibson who scuffed his shot wide under pressure.
Walsall Wood made the breakthrough on 33 minutes from a corner. Peter Till’s set piece was headed back across goal by Hurren to Jake Humphries, who’s header found the back of the net. The goal was given despite protests from Paget for a foul on Rhule in the build up.
Walsall Wood now had their tails up and on the 42nd minute a long ball by Mitch Tolley was flicked on by Lei Brown to Sam Agar. Agar’s cross from the right was turned behind for a corner by Luke Bradley with Jordan Fitzpatrick ready to pounce at the far post.
The first 45 ended with Paget searching for an equaliser; Billy Fagg’s cross flashing across the goal with the ball agonisingly out of reach for Lemaar Rhule.
In the second half Paget pushed on early looking for the elusive goal that their play deserved and they were finally rewarded for their endeavour in the 56th minute. Dean Morris dispatching a free-kick out of Lloyd Ransome’s reach and into the back of the net.
Walsall Wood now showed more attacking intent and Humphries was unfortunate to see his header glanced wide. Paget too continued to attack, not satisfied with settling for a point and Bakala saw a header narrowly wide before Williams had a shot charged down which ended up going high and over the bar.
Paget were playing on the counter and on 65 minutes a run down the left saw Bradley find Conlon with a cross, Conlon’s header narrowly missing the target. The match was now end-to-end stuff and on 79 minutes, Walsall Wood were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Till’s free kick found Tolley at the far post, who headed back across goal to Agar who scored a powerful header into the roof of the net.
The Bears reply was almost instant. A long ball over the top by Bradley saw Carter outpace the Walsall Wood defence before slotting the ball under Lloyd Ransome in the Wood goal.
Paget continued to pour men forward looking for a win and on 88 minutes Zach Brown raced clear and with Conlon totally unmarked to his left chose to take on the shot himself, lashing the ball wide.
This miss was to prove extremely costly as deep into injury time, Mark Williams lost the ball on the edge of the Paget box and Walsall Wood substitute Tony Clarke unleashed a superb effort which found the top corner, to see Walsall Wood snatch the three points at the death.
