Last Gasp Paget Snatch Three Points
A stunning free kick from Rico Taylor snatched three points for the Bears against Knowle
Paget forged a dramatic late reprieve to snatch three points from a valiant Knowle side, in a pulsating encounter at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground on Tuesday night.
Knowle, fresh off a highly impressive 2-0 victory over Fairfield Villa arrived full of confidence and it was the Robins who dominated the early exchanges, with Alex Knight in particular causing problems with his pace and trickery. Paget were handed a boost however in the 28th minute, when striker Mark Bellingham was hauled down on the edge of the penalty area when clean through on goal by Knowle’s Niall Gilbride, the referee having no alternative but to issue a red card. Paget then began to gain more a foothold in the game, as they tried to make the extra man count, but Knowle’s resilient defending and sheer determination restricted the hosts to only a few half chances as they became increasingly frustrated by the offside flag.
The second half started in much the same vain as the first, Paget frustrated by a seemingly impenetrable Knowle iron curtain and Knowle looking dangerous on the break. It was the visitors who then took a deserved lead on 60 minutes following a defensive howler from the Bears. Alex Knight capitalising to put the Robins 1-0 up. Jason Lanns brought on the returning Daniel Carter in an attempt to offer Mark Bellingham more support in attack and the breakthrough followed shortly after. A long ball over the top found wide-man Reuben Wilson who beat the offside trap and whipped a cross into the six yard box, which found the prolific Mark Bellingham who bundled the ball home. Paget seemed boosted by this, but it was Knowle who immediately regained the lead, a stunning 25 yard shot from wide left by Callum Ingram left Paget ‘keeper Josh Benton with no chance. Paget were frustrated and their cause was further dented in the 66th minute when midfielder Mark Williams was dismissed to reduce both sides to ten men. The Bears poured men forward in what became an increasingly open and frantic game and snatched an equaliser in the 81st minute when Daniel Carter lobbed Conal Dowling in the Knowle goal, his shot crashing off the bar and over the line. Paget sensed blood and the pacey Rico Taylor and Junior Rydhel were causing the tiring Knowle defence all sorts of problems. In the 84th minute, Daniel Carter drew a foul from the Knowle defender and Rico Taylor stepped up to curl a beautiful free kick into the corner of the net, leaving Dowling with no chance. Paget had snapped an unlikely victory from the jaws of a despairing defeat.
