Division One Play-Off contenders Glasshoughton Welfare bowed out of the Toolstation NCEL League Cup after a 2-0 defeat at Parkgate last night- and although Glassy’s Assistant Manager Lee Vigars was sorry to be exiting the competition, he was pleased that most of his other objectives for the evening had been achieved with a difficult few weeks ahead, writes Colin Muncie for the Bootiful Game and the Parkgate FC website.
Two first half strikes from returning front man Nathan Forbes (6 minutes and 39) sealed the home side’s win in front of a crowd of 69 at Green Lane.
Lee told us “I’m disappointed with the result tonight but the game served its purpose for us. We needed to look at a number of lads this evening in regard to whether they are match fit and sharp enough to be involved at the weekend, and we also wanted to give a few fringe players a start and see how they'd go. I think we got the answers we were looking for so it was all good in that respect “
Lee felt that the first half determined the course of the game “We basically lost this game in the opening 45 minutes” he said.” It was always going to be tricky with several lads playing together tonight for the first time: but our intensity and work rate just wasn't acceptable in the opening quarter. We deservedly fell behind to a great strike but then rallied a little to calm things down. Conor Glavin has hit the crossbar with a terrific effort and Ryan Ferguson had a glorious chance when blazing over from ten yards. Although Parkgate dominated the first period, Matt (Zaniewski) didn't really have much to do”
Lee thought his side were stronger after the break. “In the second half we were a lot better” he said.” We kept our shape, defended well, showed more composure in possession and again created a few chances where we could and should have done better. Matt’s pulled off a couple of good saves late on, but we felt we probably just edged the second half without really hurting them”.
“But it's now back to league action -and we'll be fully focused on putting a solid run together to see us finish the season as high as we possibly can”.
