Sports Club - What is the Sports Club?
Possibly one of the best-kept secrets at Burntstump, The Sports Club are the owners of the ground and all that stands on it.
As you will see from the History Section it was formed in 1973 when it arranged the original purchase of the ground. Since then it has overseen all the development we can see today and has plans for the future.
Never massively well off it has always fought a battle to get the funds to realise the ambitions of it’s various Officers over the years. You will see the list of various Presidents the Sports Club have had over the years and any one of them could give you a list of names of those who made significant contributions during their terms of office. All of them have quietly gone about the business of improving the facility and for both previous and current incumbents it is very much a work in progress.
So the Sports Club manage Burntstump from new building work to maintenance on the existing, from marking out the pitches, cutting the grass to major ground maintenance, running he bar and kitchen to cleaning the changing rooms and clubroom, applying for planning changes/additions to liaising with the local residents association. In fact most everything that leaves the Rugby Club free to concentrate on matters on the pitch.
The Sports Club is a registered company limited by guarantee and is also VAT registered and is run by a Board of Directors in accordance with all necessary rules, regulations and legislation. It is a business and has to be operated as such.
