Wrong end of the A52!

Paviors took the short trip down to the wrong end of the A52 to the Derby Festival on a day baked in sunshine, but a pitch that looked like the fifth week on fighting beyond Thiepval at the battle of the Somme! Derby have invested heavily in their fantastic clubhouse, but could do with stocking up on some grass seed for the pitches! Three pool games were to come and then either a semi final in the Cup or Plate depending on finishing position. The Mavericks saw debuts from Sidewinder Sam and The Javelin George, but suffered from the late withdrawal of ‘Pocket Rocket’ with a stomach bug [A trip to Derby is sometimes difficult to stomach for hardy Forest fans]. Parents had secured second mortgages, ahead of public spending cuts in order to guarantee funding for cheeseburgers, sweets and bouncy castle payments. Luckily the FTSE is looking healthy and most have taken advantage of ISA allowance increases.

Derby B v Paviors
First game of the festival was against Derby B who opened up well with their 6ft giant taking the ball up, only to be stopped short by the green and red wall. The tackles banged in, and Paviors secured the ball, spinning it out to Kamikaze Christian, who screeched in to score the opener. The Mavericks were defending like grown men and the tackling was awesome from all. Snake Hips burst through a tackle to score, before the same two got another try each to make it quads up at half time!

Half Time- Derby 0 Paviors 20

The second half saw more Paviors dominance. The Javelin made an assured start and Bish Bash Bosh distributed the ball with aplomb! Electric Elliot made a great score after some good defensive work from Renegade Rees and The ‘Javelin’ George scored a fantastic try following a superb line break, and offload from Bish Bash Bosh. Mercy law was applied and the game ended early with a six try advantage!

Final Score- Derby 0 Paviors 30

Nottingham A v Paviors
Having never beaten Nottingham, Paviors had a tough challenge in game 2. The first half was a tight affair, as Paviors continued to defend like giants. Motivated by a game against his former club, and following a big money transfer [2 cheeseburgers], Kamikaze Christian ran 20 yards to open the scoring. Nottingham levelled up before half time after sustained pressure.

Half Time- Nottingham 5 Paviors 5

The second half was another tight affair. Awesome Aston and Sidewinder Sam made their marks and ‘Wild Buffalo Bill’ made great yards over the gain line after arriving from Showcase Cinemas, full of popcorn. Paviors defended like a scene from Rorke’s Drift, but could not quite keep the Zulus Nottingham players out. They converted a try right near to the end to win the game. Paviors were unlucky not to get a share of the spoils.

Final Score- Nottingham 10 Paviors 5

Newcastle Under Lyme v Paviors
Paviors started the final pool game full of confidence having played really well in the first two games. The Irish Rover-‘Crazy Legs’ Fergus made two superb runs but was twice stopped short of the line. Snake Hips went on a mazy run to open the scores before Newcastle levelled up. Paviors were again defending like the Home Guard in 1942 with Steve as Captain Mannering and Roni as Sergeant Wilson! Tackles of the season were seen from The Javelin George who morphed into a brick wall and drove a player back five yards onto his backside- pure testosterone. Then Crazy Legs, came back on from temporary injury to run 20 yards and hit someone [legally] like a TGV-incredible.

Half Time –Newcastle 5 Paviors 5

Snake Hips opened the scores early in the second half as Paviors passed the ball well through a couple of phases….with a minute to go Newcastle piled on the pressure and although defence was stouter than a pint of Guinness from Temple Bar..Newcastle scored to tie the game. However, Paviors had qualified for the cup semi final!

Final Score- Newcastle 10 Paviors 10

Cup Semi Final- Melbourne v Paviors

Melbourne started the Semi-Final strongly but great tackling from Barnstorming Ben and JVC Josh keep the Derbyshire outfit at bay. Paviors scored first as Snake Hips zig-zagged round two defenders to score on the left wing. Crazy Legs doubled up, bursting through two tackles to streak [clothes on] down the right and score. Melbourne powered back with a great try to leave it on a knife edge at half time.

Half Time –Melbourne 5 Paviors 10

Melbourne piled on the pressure in the second half and soon got an equalising try. Paviors defended well but were suffering with injuries sustained in brave defence. Just before the final whistle, a Melbourne player broke through and despite being tackled well went over the line……….doubts around the grounding of the ball were referred to the big screen and fourth official, but they were less abundant than grass seed! Melbourne played well and were physically more dominant, but the Mavericks had put up a superb display

Final Score- Melbourne 15 Paviors 10

Steve, Roni and Alison were very proud of the performances today…the best of the season, especially in defence. We were joint 3rd overall. Thanks to all the parents for their efforts and invaluable support. We are already looking forward to next season!
