This weeks Gytes Gossip for the Peeblesshire News on 19.10.12.

Tomorrow Glenrath Farm Eggs sponsored Peebles return to home turf when they host Morgan Academy FP at the Gytes in RBS Championship Division B. Although Morgan currently sit pointless at the foot of the table Peter Wright’s men must avoid any hint of complacency which could turn this fixture into a banana skin in the chase for promotion. A solid performance will be required to get firstly the match points for a win and then to go for a bonus by scoring more than four tries – anything over that which can boost the points differential will be a true measure of the progress made so far this season. The match kicks-off at 3:00pm. This match is sponsored by Armac Veterinary Group and the ‘Trouts and Danglers’.

The seconds - sponsored by FIRST XV and rugbystuff.com – travel into Edinburgh for an away fixture against Forrester in RBS Reserve League East 1. This match kicks off at 3:00pm.

The Colts - supported by BARC Coach Hire – entertain Kelso Harlequins in the Border Semi-Junior League. Kick off is at 3:00pm in Hay Lodge Park for Colts fans.

Sunday sees the club under-16 side back in action when they travel down to Selkirk to take on the Cougars in a Border Under-16 League fixture.

Last Saturday Glenrath Farm Eggs sponsored Peebles travelled the short distance to Hawthornden to face Lasswade, lying just a couple of places below Peebles in the table, and coached by Dave Cockburn who was in charge at the Gytes a number of seasons ago. After an indifferent start by the visitors, Lasswade took a deserved lead on the balance of the early play. This, however, jolted the Gytes men into action, and, driven on from the side-lines by coach Peter Wright, Peebles took a grip of the game and gained the upper hand. Playing expansive fifteen man rugby the passes began to stick and with the pack dominant Peebles went on to record an eleven try 71 – 5 victory as the home side wilted under the sustained onslaught. There was no sign of complacency, with the visitors keeping the foot firmly on the pedal for the whole game, keeping the scoreboard turning over right into added time. This result is all the more remarkable given the number of first team squad members missing through injury.

The seconds - sponsored by FIRST XV and rugbystuff – were due to play Kelso A at home in an RBS Reserve League East 1 but had to call it off due to a lack of player numbers which following last week’s win was a big disappointment to the team manager and coaches. We need to get the seconds playing and hopefully the situation will improve as injuries clear up and players unavailable for other reasons come back – a strong first fifteen squad will become even stronger through competition for places from a strong seconds squad pushing for places.

The Colts made the long journey down to Corbridge to play Tynedale in the Border Semi-Junior League coming home very happy with a 16 – 20 win under their belts.

Tonight the Peebles Concert band will be entertaining members with a concert which also features ‘Tutti Flutti’ in the Eastgate Clubrooms starting at 7:30 pm.

On Friday 26th October Peebles Silver Band are the hosts for a quiz night starting at 7:30pm – members and guests only. Members are asked to support these events. Please note that the club operates a Challenge-25 policy.

October sees the start of the new winter season for the Peebles Accordion and Fiddle Club which meets in the Eastgate Clubrooms on the last Thursday each month. The guest bands are as follows 25th October Blair Gardiner Trio, 29th November Dochie McCallum and Friends, 31st January Ewan Galloway Trio, 28th February Iain McPhail Scottish Country Dance Band, 28th March Koda and 25th April James Coutts Trio.

All at the club were saddened to hear of the death last Friday of Jimmy Renwick a long term member and supporter of the club. Jimmy was a regular at home games, firstly in Hay Lodge Park, and then down at the Gytes when the 1st XV base moved there in the 1990’s. Our condolences go to his family.

Finally – Gytes Gossip wishes Neil Hogarth all the best as he goes into St Johns Hospital at Livingston today, for an operation to repair injuries to his cheekbone, eye socket and jaw, sustained in the match against Hawick YM. All at the club wish Neil a speedy and complete recovery and hope to see him back playing again.
