Tomorrow Glenrath Farm Eggs sponsored Peebles are back on the road when they travel through to Neilson Park to play Haddington in RBS Championship Division B after two successful weeks at the Gytes. Haddington are never an easy team to play, especially on their own patch, and their current league position is probably not a true reflection of their ability. Peter Wright’s team will have to give them true respect and, hopefully, their rich vein of form will continue and they come home with a win, which is now vital, given the way the table is tightening at the top after last week’s results, with there now only being four points separating the top three teams seeking that one promotion place. The team will be looking for a big support after last week’s win over Musselburgh, and travelling fans should take note that this match has a 2:00pm kick-off following the change to the clocks last weekend.

The Colts - supported by BARC Coach Hire – have Peebles to themselves when they host Jed Thistle in the Border Semi-Junior League at Hay Lodge Park - kick off is at 2:00pm for Colts fans. Members and supporters who are not going to either Haddington or Selkirk are asked to go up and support the Colts and see some of the club’s future talent in action.

Sunday sees the club under-16 side in action when they host Gala Under-16’ in a Border Under-16 League fixture kick-off 1:00pm in Hay Lodge Park.

Last Saturday Glenrath Farm Eggs sponsored Peebles played table toppers Musselburgh in RBS Championship Division B at the Gytes. In a first half, in which neither side gave any quarter and both played open attractive attacking rugby, Peebles took the lead after about twenty minutes, with an unconverted try, and held that slim advantage until half-time. Early into the second half Peebles moved into an 8 – 0 lead with a Greg Raeburn penalty goal but Muselburgh struck back with a converted try to narrow the lead to 8 – 7. Soon after the visitors took the lead with a penalty goal to make the score 8 – 10 and then stretched it to 8 – 15 with an unconverted try. Sensing a win they pressed on, but Peebles are made of sterner stuff, and fought back to level the scores with a converted try making it 15 – 15 with half an hour of the second half gone, and ten minutes still to play. Play continued to be end to end with both sides creating chances but defending well. Finger nails were being well chewed by both sets of fans, but it was Peebles who broke the deadlock with another Greg Raeburn penalty goal to make it 18 – 15 for the home side. Late on Peter Wright’s men wrapped up the points with an unconverted try to take the score to 23 – 15 and that was how it finished – leaving the visitors without even the consolation of a losing bonus point. This was one of the best games seen at the Gytes by your correspondent in a long time, and testament has to be given to both sides for the positive way in which the game was approached – both had a real desire to win it but perhaps Peebles were just the hungrier and needed the win that bit more on the day.

The Colts were away to Hawick to play leading side Hawick Wanderers – hoping to continue their winning run unfortunately this was not to be with the league leaders winning by 40 – 3.

On Sunday the Peebles Under-16 side were due to play their counterparts from Langholm at Hay Lodge Park, however, due to a lack of players, Langholm have had to withdraw from the league. A well-attended training session was held for those players who were not on the Duke of Edinburgh Award hike – emphasising the terrific work ethic in this squad of boys.

Tomorrow night there is a parlour derby in the Eastgate Clubrooms. This is a fundraiser for Tweeddale Rovers FC and Peebles Ex-Service Pipe Band starting at 7:30pm. Entry is £5 including a light supper. Members and Guests – please note that the club operates a Challenge 25 policy.

Next Saturday 10th November there is a coffee morning being held in the Eastgate Clubrooms aid of Macmillan Cancer Care from 10:00am till 12 noon – usual stalls. Members are asked to support this very deserving cause.

There will be a Sunday Carvery Roast Lunch in the clubrooms on 11th November prior to the showing of Scotland v New Zealand – the first of the Autumn International Series on the Big Screen – the match kicks off at 2:30pm. Saturday 17th November sees the second of the Autumn Series of Internationals when Scotland take on South Africa – the match will be shown on the Big Screen kick-off 2:30pm. In the evening there will be a Robbie Williams Tribute night from 8:00pm till late to raise funds for Peebles Rovers. On Friday 23rd November members can indulge in some mental gymnastics when the Peebles RFC Quiz night takes place at 7:30 pm – David Cornwall will come up with the usual mix of tasks to test the best.

Saturday 24th November is a busy day with the Eastgate Clubrooms playing host to a coffee morning and craft fair from 10:00am till 2:00pm followed by the Scotland v Tonga International on the big screen at 3:00pm. The Peebles Accordian and Fiddle Club meets in the Eastgate Clubrooms on the last Thursday of each month with the next night being 29th November when the guest band will be Dochie McCallum and Friends.

And finally – Helen Newton and Margaret Hannah donned fancy dress last Saturday at the Gytes to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care – thanks to the generosity of all those at the match the magnificent sum of £500 was raised. A big thank you to all who dug deep and contributed to this effort by the girls.
