This weeks Gytes Gossip for the Peeblesshire News on 4.1.13.

Gytes Gossip takes this opportunity to wish all members, players and supporters of Peebles RFC a happy and prosperous New Year for 2013.

Tomorrow Peebles RFC – sponsored by Glenrath Farm Eggs – are back in RBS Championship B action when they make the journey over the Firth of Forth to the ‘Lang Toon’ to play Kirkcaldy at the Beveridge Park – never the happiest of hunting grounds albeit Peebles have achieved some good results there in the past but there have also been some complete disasters. This will be a tricky fixture as Kirkcaldy proved to be a difficult nut to crack at the Gytes, despite the 41 – 15 scoreline, so Peter Wright’s men will have to be at their very best to get the desired result. Peebles fans will also be scanning the results from elsewhere in the division where the outcome of Howe of Fife v Musselburgh will also have a big bearing on the promotion race. Kick-off at the Beveridge Park is 3:00pm for travelling fans.

The seconds – sponsored by FIRST XV and rugbystuff.com – are away to RHC 2nds in an RBS Reserve League East 1 encounter – kick off is 2:00pm for travelling seconds’ fans – the venue is Union Park in Corstorphine.

The Colts – supported by BARC Coach Hire – are at home to face Tynedale Colts in the Borders Semi-Junior League. Kick Off is 2:00pm at Peebles High School for Colts fans.

Last weekend Glenrath Farm Eggs sponsored Peebles RFC were due to play Jedforest at the Gytes in an RBS Borders Regional Cup Tie but despite the weather for once being favourable the game had to be postponed due Jed being unable to raise a team because of an injury crisis at the club. However Peebles were able to get some game time after fixing up a midday friendly match against Edinburgh Accies from the RBS Premiership. This proved to be a good workout for Peter Wright’s men despite the 29 – 12 loss and gave the opportunity for some of the fringe squad players to have first team action.

The Colts – supported by BARC Coach Hire – were in action away at Langholm in the Borders Semi-Junior League and, despite missing several regulars, they won 13 – 12 against a fast improving Langholm Colts side.

There is a new jive class starting up in the Eastgate Clubrooms on Tuesday 8th January at 7:30pm cost £35 for a 7 week course – contact Chalky at Le Roc phone 0789 689 2952 or email chalky@lerocscotland.com

Gytes Gossip was saddened to hear of the death, after a short illness, of Daniel T Ward. Known to most of us as Dan – he was a well-respected and liked figure in the community. Dan was for many years a teacher at Kingsland Primary and was instrumental in starting mini rugby in Peebles both with the school and the Peebles club – many players who have appeared in Peebles colours over the years had their first rugby experience under his tutelage. He was also an accomplished musician playing a variety of instruments but his favourite was no doubt the clarinet with which he played traditional New Orleans jazz with aplomb. Dan was for many years a stalwart member of Peebles Silver Band where he was also heavily involved in tutoring youngsters who joined the junior band before graduating to the senior ranks. He will be sorely missed on the touchline with his pithy comments, also in musical circles all over the Borders and in the Edinburgh Area where his talent was always in demand. Our commiserations go to all of Dan’s family – the club will honour Dan with a minute’s silence before the kick-off in the next home game on 19th January when Peebles play Hawick in the RBS Regional Cup Qualifier.
