Penallta Youth welcomed Pontypool Utd to their new club house expecting a hard game but were faced with a "Pool" side of only 13 players ...

.... and passive scrummaging which forced the home team to cut their pack by two players. This enabled the coaches to use some of their faster forwards and this lead to a more open game than normal.

From the kick off the Youth put the visitors under pressure which lead to a penalty opportunity from one yard inside Ponty's half. Despite a strong cross wind Outside half Bleddyn Corns slotted the kick over with ease.Minutes later Squirrel was presented with an equally hard kick which he once again stroked over.

Penallta continued to attack the visitors try line but due to a slack pass in the back line Pontypool were able to run in a try which was converted taking them into a 7-6 lead.

Captain Luke Purnell was yellow carded due to an off the ball incident which lead to Penallta being down to 12 men at the restart but this did nothing to slow the "Blues and Golds" down. With an excellent display of positional kicking and strong control of his back line young Cornsy kept Pontypool pinned in their half and with a drop goal which sailed between the up rights Pen were back in the lead.

Centre Dale Jones crashed over the line to score a try set up by some good handling by the backs which once again Squirrel converted, taking Pen into a 13-6 lead at half time.

There was no change in the pattern of play in the second half with Fullback Morgan Power cutting through Pontypool's back line as if they weren't there and placing the ball down over the line to give Bleddyn his easiest kick so far. But Penallta still wanted more and with a breakaway try Adam Davies scored on his Youth debut, which when converted took Bleddyns' personal tally to 15 points.

Whilst the more established lads had good games, the "under sixteens" showed tremendous promise. Ryan Lintern had a very good game at second row and hooker Nick Bishop showed he has a good pair of hands .

Flanker Jordan Meredith seemed to be all over the park attacking and tackling like a player twice his size. But the player awarded joint man of the match with Bleddyn Corns was Scrum half Chris Thomas. Chrisy tackled, foraged, darted and ran brilliantly all game, his speed and delivery of passes gave his backs so much good ball that they were able to attack at will.

The half back combination looked as if they had been playing together for a long time allowing Squirrel plenty of time to control the game.

After such a good league win against a team that put 40 points on them at the start of the season it would be good to see more players training on Monday in order to keep up the momentum for the the 2 remaining league games.
