Penallta have a strong contingent of players selected for both Rhymney Valley and Islwyn, as well as two players with Pontypool. In total Penallta will have about 18-20 boys playing Dewar shield rugby this coming season, which will be an excellent reflection on our club and must be some sort of record. Greg Woods the Crosskeys coach took a 2 hour training session with the Islwyn Dewar Shield team last week. Greg was impressed with several of the players especially the Islwyn backrow, who all play for Penallta.
After travelling all over Wales the last few seasons and watching the best club players at this age group, I would say the top teams to watch will be, Rhymney Valley, Rhondda, Bridgend, Pontypridd, Swansea, Cardiff and Carmarthen.
In my opinion Rhymney Valley are in a very tough group. With only two teams going through from each group to the cup competition, this does put Rhymney Valley in what I would call, the group of death. However Rhymney Valley should have the best set of backs in the competition. Hopefully the talent Rhymney Valley has in their backs will be enough for them to qualify.
Islwyn’s group does not appear so tough and Islwyn could be dark horses to qualify. Islwyn don’t have any star players at this age group, but what they do have is two excellent coaches. The Islwyn team are very fit, very organised and have a superb team ethic, where everyone works hard for each other. Islwyn have two warm up games against Newport (away) on Sept 7th and Blaina Gwent (home) on Sept 19th.
Hopefully both teams will do well and qualify because from this competition the Dragons select their U16 academy players for the following year. With so many Penallta players playing Dewar Shield Rugby this year, hopefully we will have a large contingent of players in the Dragons academy next year. Cmon Penallta.

Looking at Islwyn's group, John, I think it might be worth collecting air miles to go to see their away games. You'll be clocking up more milage than Qantas.
Islwyn are playing all the farmers boys.
Well a trip to North Wales will be fun, 4 hours on the bus with 25 under 15's all wanting to pee every 5 mins
Hello Bill
Me, Mark and Gav are going up on the Friday night to check out the local Ale Houses and Curry Houses.
We will keep an eye on the boys to make sure they are drinking their Protein milkshakes and eating pasta and hopefully we can fly the Penallta flag for South Wales.
Hope they got a short memory up there, we only put one of their teams out of the Swalec final !!!!
Hopefully the day out at the Millenium will inspire the boys who are playing Dewar Shield rugby this year. I assume the final of this compertition will be at a well known stadium.
It all starts 2 months today, can't wait. When Islwyn first started training I thought they would not win one game, however a couple of months down the line and they now look a useful unit.
At the tournament at Caerphilly John, they looked raw but hungry. It'll be interesting to see how they have progressed since.
