PITMEN HAVE TO MUCH FOR UNICORNS
Penallta defeated neighbours Nelson 10 - 6 in the first round of the Mid District Cup.
Penallta defeated neighbours Nelson 10 - 6 in the first round of the Mid District Cup.
On a bright Autumn afternoon, and in front of a large crowd the Pitmen progressed to the next round of the cup after this hard fought victory.
Missing a number of First Team regulars several of the Youth Team players were drafted into the starting pack, and once again Prop LLoyd Bridges and Flanker Scott MATHEWS showed that they have got what it takes to flourish in Senior rugby eveh though both are only 18.
Another 18 year old Chris Thomas at Scrum Half had another excellent game and stood out throughout.
Nelson came full of confidence and had much the better of the opening exchanges with thier forwards physical and aggressive at the breakdown. Behind the pack they possessed both skill and speed of movement and in Full Back Curt CLABBY had perhaps the "Stand out" player on the day.
CLABBY always looked dangerous with ball in hand and possessed a mighty boot which he used to good effect. Nelson scored an early penalty and with a second built a 6 - 0 lead half way trough the first half. Penallta replied with a kick from Andre Soroko and after a ding dong first half, Nelson lead 6-3 at the break.
In the second half the Pitmen came more into the game and began to take control of the possession and territory. Seb Toms was having a great game and capped a "Man of the Match" performance with an excellent break and try after a quick tap penalty by THOMAS. Soroko again was on target with the kick and the Pitmen lead 10 - 6.
Further chances presented themselves but Penallta failed to take adavantage of thier dominance of the game, lacking some positive penetration and finishing power. On the rare occaisions Nelson did threaten then the Pitmen defence which was excellent throughout came to the fore.
Penallta always looked in control and always looked the more likely to score further tries. In the end Penallta's Fitness, Youth, and experience at an higher level of rugby week in, week out paid dividends and victory was achieved through good, old fashioned hard work.
Good luck to the UNICORNS for the remainder of the season.
