PENALLTA 11 v YNYSYBWL 12
Pitmen fail to upset the apple cart.
Penallta suffered thier first home defeat of the season going down to League highfliers Ynysybwl by a single point at Trinity Fields.
With Greg HAINES and Mark JONES still out with injury, and Martyn Dunn, Nicky Lilwall, Luke Purnell, Rhys Clarke, Andrew Powell, Shaun Powell, and Aron Humphries all unavailable, all having played against Fleur last week, then it was all change for this tough encounter with one of the Leagues early pace-setters.
Jack Williams came in at Hooker and Penallta Youth Products LLoyd Bridges (Prop) and Scott Matthews (Flanker) who are both only 18yrs old started in a pack that also saw James Tucker making his season's debut. Luke Palmer and Gareth SHORT being the new faces on the bench.
Andre Soroko scored a penalty after 14 minutes to cancel out one by the visitors, and the Pitmen looked the more likely of the sides to score a try. The young Ynysybwl side were physical and aggressive at the breakdown and turned the ball over at several rucks to disrupt the Penallta pattern of play. Although having the better of the half the Pitmen were finding the Bwl defence a tough nut to crack.
On 30 minutes after a period of pressure Livewire Scrum Half Chris Thomas scored a fine try and was a real handfull throughout the game. At half time Penallta lead 8 - 3. With all the forced pre match changes Penallta also lost all action Flanker Ross Morgan with a nasty eye injury and broken nose, he in turn was replaced by SHORT who showed up well in both the set piece and loose play.
The second half went much like the first with Penallta having plenty of ball. SOROKO kicked a second penalty on 45 minutes and Penallta lead 11 - 3. Despite all thier possession the Pitmen failed to create and turn it into points. The visitors began to use the wind to pin Penallta back into thier 22 and keeping the host's under pressure were awarded a number of penalties. Three of these they converted, two being excellent efforts from some distance and suddenly they lead 11 - 12.
Youngsters WILLIAMS, BRIDGES, and MATTHEWS all had excellent games in the pack, as did the more experienced Lee Rowlands. Chris Thomas at scrum half was probably the best player on the park, and Jo MERRIMAN and Gareth Edwards also stood out.
All the possession howver came to nothing and Ynysybwl held out for a win that keeps them hot om the heels of Ystrad Rhondda. This was a game the Pitmen should have won, but lack of any penetration and poor discipline allowed the visitors to claim the four points with the Pitmen gaining a consolation Bonus point in defeat. If Penallta are going to push for a top four spot then these are the type og games they must win especially at home. This was a game that was thrown away.
Rhymney home next week and much improvement is needed to get the win and put the Pitmen back on track. Man of the Match award went to Chris Thomas.
