Rugby is the largest club sport in America with over 60,000 participants. The story of its founding is that in 1823 at the school of Rugby, William Web Ellis picked up the ball during a game of soccer and ran the length of the field. Whether a myth or not, the Rugby World Cup trophy bears his name to this day.

Peninsula teams will play in the Rugby Virginia league, which is one of the fastest growing High School divisions in the Country. Rugby Virgina is a member of the national governing rugby organization, USA Rugby. Warwick, Bethel, Kecoughtan, Denbigh, Menchville, Heritage, United (Yorktown/Poquoson) and possibly Woodside and Hampton high schools make up the Peninsula District Rugby League.
