CUMBRIA U20s lost their opening game 32-14 to Cheshire at Workington on Sunday.
The visitors made much the better start and were 18-0 ahead by half-time with Cumbria conceding 2 penalties, a conversion and 2 tries. Cumbria appeared to kick away too much ball during this period, some directly into touch and they missed two crucial one-on-one tackles. They were also guilty of not protecting the ball when going into contact. However that is perhaps being a little harsh on Cumbria as they were up against a very well organised Cheshire team who had trained well together for a couple of months.
The Cumbrian coaches Chris Hayton, Dan Bowman and Simon Mulholland had done a good job with the squad but with half the time available to their Cheshire counterparts. Their influence was obvious, for as the game went on, the Cumbrian team became more cohesive and effective drawing the 2nd half 14 apiece, when scoring the only points in the last 30 minutes. During this period they exerted tremendous pressure on their opponents and put a scare into them.
Sandy Kerridge and Ryan Feeney from Penrith joined Andy Muir from Keswick and Sam Pearson from Upper Eden in the team.
After giving up 2 further tries in the 1st ten minutes of the 2nd half Cumbria took control of the game with particularly exciting running from backs Sandy Kerridge, Sam Pearson, Will Miller (Silloth) and Dan Rowell (Moresby).
Forwards George Birtle, ex-Penrith now playing at Burnage, Andy Muir, Matt Houghton (Kendal), James Ravell (Aspatria) and Ryan Feeney were involved in some great forward drives particularly during the 2nd half. The Cumbrian tries were scored by George Birtle and Andy Muir with Sam Carter (Workington) making both conversions.
Kevin Johnston, chairman of Club Cumbria, said that “the fact that Cheshire had been together as a group for longer was the key factor and this contributed to their better start.” He added “I’d like to say a special word of thanks to the likes of Miller and Rowell from the Silloth and Moresby clubs. It is heartening to see the support that is being given to the county by all the clubs but particularly the smaller ones.”
Cumbria’s next game is against Lancashire at Liverpool St Helens on 12th February.
