PENRITH 10 TARLETON 9
PENRITH SNEAK IT BY THE NARROWEST OF MARGINS
For the second week running Penrith 2s were at Winters Park. Their opponents this week were Tarleton 2nd team who are fourth place in the league.
Penrith kicked off and showed their intent by retrieving the ball and setting up the attack putting the visitors on the back foot immediately. After some good work by the forwards they were inside the opposition five metre line and took the chance with James Hope picking up and driving over inside the first five minutes. Unfortunately the conversion went wide.
For the home supporters that was the only thing to shout about. Tarleton started to take control of the game and through mistakes and the referees whistle they converted three penalties to take the lead nine points to five and put one wide.
The second half saw the home team rally after some stern words from coach Dennis Bibby and the players chatting amongst themselves. They put the Tarleton defence under pressure but couldn't find a way through. It was in this spell that Tarleton received an unjustified yellow card.
During this ten minute period the visitors kept pushing Penrith back and created space and were unlucky not to extend their lead. Penrith did have the chance to to reduce the defecit with a penalty kick but again this was put wide. With time running out Penrith went through the phases working the ball closer to the line. The ball came out of the back of one of these phases and found it's way out to Tommy Graves in a wide position who barged his way through the Tarleton defender and put the ball down to give the green and whites the lead. The conversion missed Tarleton didn't give up and forced Penrith back into their twenty two from the kick off. After being adjudged to have knocked on Penrith won the scrum and put the ball out giving them the victory 10-9.
Next week Penrith 2s travels to Southport where a much improved performance will be needed to win
