Pentraeth pile on the pressure at the top with another away victory
Pentraeths penultimate league game before the christmas break was a short away trip to neighbours Llanfair PG. Pentraeth have been struggling to find form in recent weeks and today was no different.
A young Llanfair team were pressing all over the pitch and were preventing the blues from playing their fluid passing game. There was no early threat from the hosts and chances were few and far between with both defensive units having the better of the open exchanges. Until Mark Williams picked the ball up on the corner of the Llanfair box, Mark Williams played a square ball to Ioan Hughes in acres of space. Ioan Hughes only needed 1 touch to get the ball under control and a fierce right footed strike beat the keeper and nestled in the bottom left corner. 1-0 Pentraeth and time for the flowing football to be played.
Pentraeth were starting to find their rhythm when they suffered a massive setback with the influential and dominant Tom Taylor having to leave the field due to injury. The home sides confidence was buoyed with the injury to a key player of Pentraeth, but the injury had the opposite affect on the blues, the confidence they had just started to build in the game was dealt a massive blow an they found themselves on the back foot for a long 10 minute spell. The defence held firm though and Pentraeth found themselves 2-0 up after a quick counter attack saw Mark Williams on the right wing this time and a perfectly lofted cross sailed over the keeper and found Ioan Hughes at the back post to head the ball in from no more than a yard out. The pair have started to gel over the past few games and I'm sure Ioan Hughes is very grateful of the service Mark Williams is providing at the moment.
With only 10 minutes to go before half time Pentraeth were hoping to go in with at least the 2 goal advantage but a miss clearance from full back Mathew Parry fell to Ben Verberg on the edge of the box and his deflected shot flew into the bottom right corner. 2-1 Pentraeth at half time and some harsh words were needed from manager Chris Thomas and assistant Steve Smith.
The 2nd half started as the 1st had finished, Pentraeths deep defensive line was inviting the Llanfair youngsters to attack and a few near misses and some excellent saves at the feet of the strikers from Phil Evans were keeping Pentraeth ahead. Chances for Pentraeth were something of a rarity a couple of half chances fell to Ioan Hughes but nothing clear cut. The pressure was piling on the title challengers and a 3rd goal was desperately needed.
The 3rd goal finally came from a very unlikely source when Pentraeth were awarded a throw in deep in the oppositions half, Mark Williams threw the ball to Dylan Roberts on the edge of the box a perfect lay off pass found Mathew Parry no less than 30 yards out and his first time strike with the outside of the right boot curled and dipped with venom leaving the keeper with absolutely no chance. 3-1 to Pentraeth and a memorable 2nd goal of the season for Mathew Parry on his return from injury, a possible contender for goal of the season and probably the best goal Mathew Parry will ever score.
With Llanfair needing 2 goals the game opened up and they were always vulnerable for another counter attack. The game could have been settled when possibly the finest move of the season from Pentraeth went begging, Mark Williams and Gareth Roberts exchanged one-twos down the right flank, Mark Williams whipped a cross in to Ioan Hughes who chested the ball down to Gareth Roberts, Gareth took the ball passed one defender and fed Ioan Hughes 8 yards out with only keeper to beat and his left footed shot was dragged just wide of the post. This miss finally proving that Ioan Hughes is human after all (Goal Machine).
The game was settled with time to spare when Liam Hogan found Ioan Hughes on the edge of the box, Ioan Hughes using his first touch to create that half a yard of space his 2nd a thunderbolt of a shot flew into the bottom right corner of the goal. 4-1 to Pentraeth and Ioan Hughes scores his 15th goal for the club in only 7 games. Even though we have 1 dominant goalscorer who is in excellent form I think it needs to be highlighted that the assists are spread throughout the team with 3 players all with 4 assists each - Dylan Roberts, Mark Williams and Tom Taylor. A great team effort so far lads and sharing the workload seems to be working for us. :)
Llanfair didn't give up and kept attacking looking for the 2nd goal to try and restore some pride. The young Llanfair side today proved they were worthy opposition and could battle with the top teams in the league.
Before the full time whistle came there was enough time for new signing Gareth Lee Roberts to get a 15 minute cameo on the right flank. Gareth has been training with the club for a few weeks now and his commitment and effort in training has been rewarded by manager Chris Thomas to sign him up. Gareth has integrated into the squad and group of players as a whole very quickly and it seems as though he's been with us since the start of the season. Consider this your official welcoming to the club Gareth and good luck :)
A fantastic result overall on the road again from the underperforming blues keeps the pressure on the teams above us in the league. With a few games in hand the gap can not only be closed but overhauled, but the first priority is next saturdays game against current table toppers Llangoed. The game is some what of a derby match in normal circumstances but with both clubs getting results and finding themselves in and amongst it at the top of the table adds a bit of spice to the game. A massive performance is needed next week, good luck lads and here's to another 3 points.
