History - History 1
Though early records are scant it is known that a team called the "Tigers" carried the rugby banner during the 20,s. It was founded in 1921 ( see pic )after a meeting had been called at the Golden Lion Hotel when a group of young miners and several other enthusiasts decided to play their football at "home" instead of searching further afield at Ammanford , Tycroes ,Saron or Garnent. The idea caught on and the Penybanc "Tigers" were born . Because the majority of members were miners it was readily agreed that the club colours should be Black with a Tiger emblem on each jersey. It was decided to adopt this unusual title as members felt it was synonymous with the Golden Lion Hotel , the birth place of the club which also served as headquarters.Near the outskirts of the village , a ground known as Waun Goch Fach was least from a local farmer and the first game was against Bynea which was won 4 - 3 . The new club soon developed a strong team spirit which enabled it to hold its own against more established sides like Blenau , Bettws , Furnace and Saron .The growth of the club was remarkable considering the size of the village and a second team was launched soon after that successful inagural season .they adopted an unusual title and became known as the "Rangers " Just after WW1 the Amman Valley Rugby Union was formed and consisted of teams such as Amman Rovers , Saron , Penygroes , Cwmgors , Blaenau , Tycroes , Bettws and Grenig Rovers . In 1922 the " Tigers " joined the lleague and the following season they won the cup competition defeating Penygroes at Ammanford 4 - 3 - a dropped goal for Penybanc to a try to Penygroes. A brave attempt was made to keep the rugby banner flying at penybanc but the following year saw almalgamation of Penybanc and tycroes. Shortly after the "Tigers" went into voluntary Liquidation because of reasons outside their control. The club restarted in 1934 under similar circumstances which launched the "tigers" in 1921 when the boys of the village decided to play their rugby at home their H.Q was again the Golden Lion Hotel. With the Waun Goch Fach ground no longer available a field was leased opposite the Pantyffynnon Colliery where they remained until 1972.
