Whitley Bay 'A' 3 Percy Main 1
Not really our night.....
Without doubt, Whitley Bay A could be considered as Percy Main's bogey team and that trend continued last night as The Bay came from behind to take the points in what was a largely poor display by the visitors, despite an encouraging start.
Almost 6 years have passed since The Main were last victorious against Whitley and 13 games have now been played during that time, in both league and cup. We've had a couple of hammerings and some draws, which on another day might've gone our way, (but didn't) while last night nothing was to change, even after the gloved Paul Collinson had robbed Whitley's Gareth Williams, to run on and execute a superb finish which put Percy a goal to the good with only 8 minutes on the clock. It was his 10th goal in only 10 appearances for Percy Main, since signing earlier on in the season.
For Whitley Bay, Williams looking to atone sent a free kick just over for the home side, while Thomas Kalthoeber brought a save from Rob Rodgerson in The Main's goal from Cam Cunningham's flag kick.
There might've been another for Percy Main as Jack Armstrong's cross from the right just evaded the onrushing Joe Rowan, but might've been was all it was, when McKenzie Sharpe cut in from the right and netted the equaliser for Whitley Bay only a minute later. Things got worse for the visitors on 27 minutes Paul,Dunn's innocuous looking free kick was spilled by Rodgerson and Sharpe nipped in for his second to put the home side in front.
The Main rallied and had chances towards the end of the first half, but found the Bay custodian in fine form - there was a great move down the right as Marcus McCreedy found Armstrong and his cross was met by the in form Rowan, but Callum Harley in the home goal was equal to his effort, while the Whitley goalkeeper thwarted Rowan once more on 35 minutes with a brilliant full length save and repeated the feat only a minute later to deny Jake Forster.
There were chances at both ends at the start of the second half, for Whitley, Cunningham centred for Sharpe, but his effort was just last the post and at the other end, Rowan's corner kick was headed across goal by James Leggett and Collinson's shot, rattled the woodwork.
That was about as close as Percy Main were to come to troubling Harley any more and Whitley Bay rubbed salt in the visitors wounds as Sharpe completed his hat trick in the 61st minute as he took advantage of some questionable defending.
One bonus for The Main was the 67th minute introduction of Stew Wright, injured since the first month of the season who will provide further options for the 6 game run in.
It's FC United of Newcastle away on Saturday......
