More than twenty local women have joined PRFC to play the non contact game of touch rugby and they will be holding a demonstration/taster training session on Sunday 18 December at PRFC from 11.00am for anyone to come and see what it is about and for any ladies, 13 and over, to have a go.
The women (headed by Fizz Bewley, who used to play contact rugby for the original Pershore women’s squad) started playing touch rugby as Crowle Ladies Touch Rugby Club, which formed in May this year and they were doing well in the new Midlands Ladies Touch League. Once the nights drew in, however, with no floodlighting at Crowle Playing fields, where they were originally based, it was proving a challenge to finding suitable winter training facilities. The high cost also to the ladies of being independent from any rugby club and paying for facilities, including for hosting tournaments as well as winter training, meant that Pershore RFC’s offer for the ladies to join the club as playing members has thrown them a lifeline.
The ladies will now be called “Pershore Women’s Touch Rugby Club” and are already benefiting from coming under Pershore RFC’s wing, using the clubhouse and its facilities and especially having support with coaching from Sean Crouch and Paul Griffiths.
Fizz says that PRFC’s warm welcome will mean more women than ever will want to take part in the popular sport of Touch Rugby: “We have had such a lot of interest from women who want to play this non contact version of rugby and now that we are based at Pershore, with all the club’s support, it is easier than ever for ladies to come and join in. It is such fun because there are no tackles, nor scrums and line-outs, just lots of running, passing and outwitting the other side. And, with us, there is lots of laughing too because rules are different to contact and we are all learning together!”
From 18th January the Women’s Touch Rugby team will be training every Wednesday from 7.30pm at the club. Telephone Fizz on 01905 381080 for further details.
The Women’s Touch Rugby Club have now played in three 2011/12 Midlands Ladies Touch Rugby League tournaments and are currently ranked fifth out of the ten teams competing, the others being Bromyard, Camp Hill, Droitwich, Chaddesley Corbett, Telford, Wolverhampton, Cirencester, Ross and Redditch. The ladies are currently looking for sponsors for match kit and also home tournaments.
