Kircaldy 29 v 8 Perthshire Colts
Kircaldy 29 v 8 Perthshire Colts
Perthshire started this game well, absorbing early Kircaldy attacks, rucking in pods and putting in some good tackles, Patryk Weyer had 3 notable hits which set the opposition back on its heels and Shire surged forward. Good aggression then pushed a mess of forwards over the Kircaldy try line and Ruairidh Sutherland emerged from the pile of bodies having scored the try.
There was a strong wind and Kircaldy started to deal with the conditions much better and, though Ewan Mackenzie did really well in the early line outs for Perthshire, it was Kircaldy ball handling which was superior and their strong forwards began to make serious in roads through increasingly weak visitor tackling.
As a result a penalty, 2 tries and a conversion were clocked up by the home side who were increasingly aggressive and confident, playing a strong direct forward game which Shire were finding difficult to cope with. At half time it was 15 – 5.
At the start of the second half a Shire attack created a penalty opportunity for Peter Bruce Wooton who converted the kick well. Cue then a series of Kircaldy attacks which Perthshire defended and then attacked but a loose back hand pass attempt was snatched by Kircaldy who then went 60 metres to eventually score and convert.
A similar scenario then followed and this time a spilled Shire forward ball was gathered up by Kircaldy in their 25 metre area and then running up the pitch for their impressive front rower to run in under the posts for another converted try, the final score 29 – 8.
It is easy to speculate that what seemed to be a junior sized pitch restricted the Shire back effort but the reality was that the game was won by Kircaldy’s powerful forwards persistently breaking Shire tackles, creating good pressure, causing Shire morale to flatten and tackling effectiveness to become increasingly diluted. The Kircaldy line outs, scrums and rucking were superior and exposed the lack of time together and collective fitness of our own forwards. Despite fighting well as individuals, non more so than Callum Coutts who scrapped and bludgeoned his way through the game from start to finish, the Shire forwards need to work on cohesion, fitness and continuity for a full 80 minutes and to achieve this its vital to get to training and then be available for games.
Thumbs up to Aaron Sheach and Declan O Brien for getting to the game late despite prior commitments as they then had to come on to replace injured players. Also big thanks to David Macgill who came along to help to help Craig with coaching.
After the game kircaldy served up pie of the season with an impressive homemade creation which was appreciated by all in a lively clubhouse atmosphere.
We have a 4 week competitive game break now for the October holidays; training will continue however, please make every effort to get there and Ormie will also be trying to get a friendly in at some stage.
It would be really helpful if players could ask parents to assist with transport to future games, so thanks in advance if you can help.
Forwards; Callum Coutts, Fraser Kennedy, David Hill, Euan MacFarlane, Patryk Weyer, Ben MacGrogan, Robert Tainen, Ewan Mackenzie, Jamie Robertson, Aaron Sheach, Declan O Brien.
Backs; Ruairidh Sutherland, Peter Bruce Wooton, Ben Vardi, Euan Flett, Scott Alcorn, Keiran Adams, Ben Taylor
