Match Report by David Roulstone

With part of the pitch still frozen at Stoneyhill the match was switched to Pinkie, and both teams relished the opportunity to progress in the Scottish Cup.

While the opening 10 minutes was played almost completely in the Perthshire half the visitors looked solid in defence, and strong in the first scrums. Despite this the Musselburgh pack began to gain the upper hand up front and following some impressive scrummaging and rucking scored the opening try when hooker Ronan Stott latched on to a popped pass from Michael Fleming, to cross the whitewash close to the posts after 12 minutes. Despite the swirling wind Fraser McMillan easily landed the conversion. (7-0)

From the restart Musselburgh immediately carried the ball back into the Perthshire half and continued to maintain their territorial advantage. The pressure being exerted by the Musselburgh forwards, particularly around the breakdown area ensured the Perthshire backs had to make do with poor ball and after a hurried defensive kick Musselburgh ran in their second try on 20 minutes after the attacking team chipped beyond the Perthshire defensive line and the bouncing ball was collected and touched down by Luke Taylor. The conversion missed to the right of the posts. (12-0)

Due to injury to a Perthshire prop, Declan O'Brien the scrums became uncontested for the remainder of the match, which evened up an area that Musselburgh were dominating. The home side continued to press home their field position and after a series of blind side attacks spread the ball wide and executed a perfect scissors move completely wrong footing the Perthshire defence and allowing Aaron Hay to glide in under the posts on 24 minutes, Fraser McMillan then converted the try, (19-0)

From the kick-off Musselburgh opened up from their own 22 but were penalised for coming in from the side at the breakdown. The penalty was missed but Perthshire did enjoy their best period of the first half. Despite this they could not penetrate the aggressive Musselburgh defence. The home team worked themselves back up the field and went further ahead on 35 minutes after some dynamic forward play lead to quick ball allowing Fraser McMillan, who exploited a gap in the retreating Perthshire defence to burst through to score under the posts, he went on to convert the try. (26-0)

Musselburgh ended the first half in the best possible way when following good back row play, Captain Ally Miller rumbled in under the posts for a further converted try, again by Fraser McMillan, giving a half time score of 33-0.

Despite a number of Musselburgh substitutions the second half began where the first left off with a confident Musselburgh team linking through a series of pop passes which opened up the opportunity for scrum half Jack Hall to score under the posts for a further converted try, by Fraser McMillan, after only 3 minutes. (40-0)

Although Perthshire were 40-0 down they continued to contest in all areas, and showed ambition when electing to run from their own 5 metre line after turning over continued Musselburgh pressure. This ambition was not rewarded as Musselburgh regained possession following a knock on and scoring a further try 10 minutes into the second half when Callum MacDonald crashed over following a series of rucks. This time the conversion was missed to the left. (45-0)

Musselburgh continued to play fast open rugby and scored their best try of the match 23 minutes into the second half from a scrum on their own 22 metre line. After slick back passing and a break by Angus Oatts in midfield two hard won rucks close to the Perthshire line eventually saw Simon Clark touch down in the corner, and although the try was unconverted Musselburgh seemed to be in total control. (50-0)

However Perthshire showed tremendous spirit in taking the match to the home team in the final quarter, and fullback, Sam Nicoll scored their opening, unconverted try with 13 minutes to go (50-5). This score came after Perthshire enjoyed their first sustained possession in the Musselburgh 22. However they were soon back in the Musselburgh half and after running a number of penalties awarded against the home side were rewarded again, 3 minutes later when Sam Nicoll scored his second try in the corner. This was converted by Connor Sutherland with an excellent touch line conversion.

With both teams tiring there were no further scores, and Musselburgh eventually secured a 50-12 victory, and await the winners of the postponed Glasgow Hawks v Boroughmuir tie.
