A close run things at ten a side
Shire come close in the P7s
Starting on a positive note – the weather did improve and the horizontal snow flurries were replaced by some nice sunshine by the end of play - check the Pics (thanks to Ronnie)
What should have been a great day of competitive mini rugby saw us somewhat let down by opposition who were a tad afraid of the weather, meaning the day was a bit monotonous with us playing Stirling County twice – one a tight fought and competitive 10-a-side game where the County were fortunate 2-0 winners, the other game a 13-a-side game on the full park where Stirling ran out clear winners
I'll focus on the 10-a-side as this is our core game in P7. We started well – Martin crashing well up the centre of the park gaining good ground and getting good off load allowing us to get the ball out wide. The wind was a factor as were cold hands a knock on had us in our first scrum. A front row of Gregor, Conner and Adam supported by Aidan A and Callum in second row saw us hold our own in the scrum – good ball came out with Aiden W passing sweetly to Rory B who almost made the gap – a bit of off side cost us a penalty and the County let loose with their BIG man who charged at us from the restart only to be scythed down by Gregor living up to his Thierry Dusautoir Tag – it was one of the technically best tackles I have seen in mini rugby and against an opponent who was a size and half bigger and shifting it was immense.
County were faster in the ruck and good at getting the ball out wide – a tight play gave Rory D a 1 on1 challenge he could not afford to miss and he nailed it – stopping the County player in his tracks. County had the faster support and won the ruck getting it to one of their speedsters wo got in for a score well against the run of play. The restart saw the Terminator almost break all the way through but he was stopped with ten to go – a well set up Shire ruck saw Arran pop the ball out and Aiden A got it wide to Rory B who did well drawing the tacklers and got in a looping pass out to Campbell H – if it had gone to hand it was a certain try but the wind was fierce and went it to ground. Wee C managed a great recovery and pick and go but the slight delay allowed the County boys to get a start and he was pushed into touch half a yard out – a sore one to lose.
The second half saw Dylan in his first competitive game and after a couple of sideways, backwards and not quite sure where to go moves it clicked and he showed not only ambition in moving forward but some really good evasive skills up the left win. Rachel was caught on a 2 on 1 and held her own committing the runner to the pass and getting in a good tackle – Alex then managed to get the County player into couch – a well worked line out with Conner making use of big man Callum saw the ball well delivered to Elliot (who was now at scrum half), a quick pop to Aiden W at fly half and we were off. . . .only for some great tackling by County to halt us with the ball 'determined' to have been spilled fiorward. From the scrum County made good use of wide play to get over again for a 2-0 lead.
Our restart made ground but County heaped on the pressure and worked us back to our 5, where after a good tussle and under instructions from Coach Campbell Rory B tried his best to hoof the ball upfield only for the wind to have the final say and push it back. Undeterred Rory B managed to catch his own kick and set off for what again looked like a certain try – the headwind must have been strong as he was caught in the final 5 leaving 2-0.
After this we had a go at 13-a-side game, something the County were uuber keen to play as they are off on tour in Wales soon and will be playing 15-a-side. . . . . . suffice to say they have been doing a lot of training on the full pitch and it showed with their better use of space and wide play. A reasonably competitive first half saw Aiden A got in a good try after well worked crash ball restart saw heads dipping in the second half and County pretty much dominated in the ruck.
We don’t play 13-a-side so we’re not going to dwell on this – the kids all tried hard – there was some good individual play with some good tackles and this was only game 2 for us on the big pitch with no training.
The team looked good at 10-a-side and this is their game just now.
Player of the Day was Gregor not only that on tackle but all the others he put as well.
Well done to all
