1st Leg Legacy Sevens at Stirling County Squad Details and Information Listed at End of Report

Last Saturday saw the first venture into the Sevens season as the Perthshire Squad travelled to Beveridge Park for the Kirkcaldy Tournament. Unfortunately, work commitments and late injury meant that only 8 players were available and many thanks to Phil Johnson who filled in at the last minute, for his considerable contribution.
In a three team pool Perthshire faced Howe of Fife and Boroughmuir, and with 3 tries from Angus Whittle and a last second try by Tom Pople Perthshire finished 26:22 winners over Howe and faced Boroughmuir for a Place in the Cup Semi finals. Despite two cracking tries from Andy Whitelaw, the pace and physicality of the Prem2 side in the last 5 mins of the game gave them a 28 :12 victory and this form was repeated by the Edinburgh side as they eventually went on to lift the Hegge Cup as tournament winners.
The Perthshire boys overcame a determined Kirkcaldy Legends side in the Plate Semi finals with a brace of tries from Whittle and Pople and a single score by Gav Bloice to finish 33:24 winners but the intensity of the encounter certainly had a bearing on the final result as the Shire boys lost out on their first piece of sevens silverware losing to Murrayfield Wanderers 24:7 in the final.
Those playing on the day should take pride in their performance as they showed some great pieces of sevens play but the lack of squad players took its toll in the latter stages of the tournament and fatigue was clearly visible in the final game.
This weekend brings the start of the Legacy Sevens and this will be Perthshire`s first foray in this 5 leg tournament, and the hope is that this will help spur the players ambitions in playing at this higher level of competition.
