Tough Conference opener for Colts.
The Colts travelled north on Sat 2 Sep 17 to face Gordonstoun School in the new Lancer Conference.
Warm sunshine and a quality playing surface greeted the teams at kick-off.
Shire were intent on a fast start and to apply pressure on the opposition, however it was Gordonstoun who were first out of the blocks.
A big and powerful side across all positions, they took the game to Shire with several waves of attack leading to two quick tries within the first 10 minutes. The home side were quicker and hungrier at the breakdown, winning plenty ball to continue on the front foot. With some of Shire's tackles going in too high and not being close enough to the ball carrier, Gordonstoun were able to advance deep into Shire's half.
However Shire worked hard to gain their own field position and won a penalty after 11 minutes which was comfortably slotted by Aidan.
Good support play led to a third try for Gordonstoun after 18 minutes before Shire were awarded a further penalty on 29 minutes, again well put away by Aidan. Gordonstoun 19 Perthshire 6. With half time approaching and Gordonstoun moving the ball well along their backline, they scored a quick brace of tries within 2 minutes - their impressive line speed and quick turnover ball paying dividends. Perthshire kept their heads up and working their way down field, won a penalty which Aidan again converted on the stroke of half time.
HT - Gordonstoun 29 Perthshire 9.
Gordonstoun continued to press home their advantage at the beginning of the second half with their big ball carriers grabbing two more tries to stretch their lead. Shire however refused to lie down and as they began to compete for the ball effectively and in greater numbers, the possession flowed. This led to good phases of play being put together and Shire were able to enjoy the majority of territory in the last 15/20 minutes of the game.
Shire's first try came from a well judged restart kick into space by Aidan which Sean skillfully gathered before evading the home defence to score on 57 minutes. This boosted Shire who were now playing with greater tenacity and power in the tackle. A strong forward charge to the line saw Kieran McL just being denied the score, however Blair was on hand to force his way over. Aidan kicked the coversion to take the score to Gordonians 41 Perthshire 21. With Shire continuing to press as full time approached, Gordonstoun intercepted a pass to score a break away try to complete the scoring.
After a slow start Shire displayed a determination to play their way back into the game and were a match for the home side in the closing stages. Next up is home game v Granite City on 9 September. Good numbers needed at training to progress team and individual work-ons.
