U16s Open Caley Cup Campaign with Win
A comfortable win for the U16s against Strathmore in the Cup
The U16s opened their 2019 Caledonia Cup campaign with a comfortable win against Strathmore.
The performance lacked some of the intensity from last weeks game against Currie in the National Cup, however the boys still managed to score 11 tries from 10 different players, whilst restricting the visitors to the one consolation score.
Shire opened the game brightly and were soon on the scoreboard with Jono swan-diving over in the right hand corner. Archie followed this up with a storming run which the defence couldn't cope with to make it 10-0. Then it was Angus' turn to sneak over; spotting a gap from close range, before Strathmore grabbed a try back after some nice inter-play in their backs. Shire bounced back straight away though with Isaac next to score following a good move which saw the ball shifted through a number of hands. Ryan then did well to hold on to a pass with his fingertips and find himself in space to run in for Perth's fifth try of the day. Ben added the conversion.
Perth were in control of the scoreboard at the is stage, and were physically the stronger team; Archie and Isaac were making significant ground in the loose, and Ruaraidh was putting in some huge hits. Duncan was popping up all over the place in attack and defence. Meanwhile, out wide Jono had a couple of nice runs and was giving his opposite number some problems.
The final score of the first half was started by a brilliant arching run from Alex C at full-back. He linked up with Jono and Alex LL, before Duncan received an inside pass which saw him leaping like a salmon over the try-line! Half Time: Perthshire 32-7 Strathmore.
Despite the half-time lead, some of the play had been a bit scrappy. Passes weren't sticking as well as last week, and our support of the ball carrier was not as good as we would have liked. However, Perth were still clinical in their finishing, and the second-half saw five further tries. Clearly your name had to started with 'A' to be allowed to score in the second-half - Adam, Andy (2), Aedan and Alex LL!)
Adam went over from close range following some sustained pressure. Then Andy got on the score-sheet with a trademark burst of speed down the right, before Aedan touched down after stepping in off his left-wing. Andy converted, and then followed this up by converting his own try a few minutes later after he stepped passed several defensive tackles. Finally the birthday boy Alex LL rounded off the day by speeding down the right touchline to record a well deserved try.
Final Sore: Perthshire 61 - 7 Strathmore
Try Scorers: Jono, Archie, Angus DP, Isaac, Ryan, Duncan, Adam, Andy (2), Aedan, Alex LL

1. Archie - good to have the big man back in the team again, and his ball carrying was immense
2. Isaac - also carried the ball really well throughout the game
3. Ruaraidh - defensively made every tackle an attacking one, dominating the collision and the breakdown
Jono also looked sharp with ball in hand, and Duncan's line out and work in the loose was really impressive.
