Second Half Collpase Costs Perthshire
Playing against a strong headwind, the U15s can't take advantage of bright start
With Perth leading 26-24, things looked good at half-time against a big Mackie team. However, it was not to be.
The boys started brightly with some good handling across the backline. Given the very windy conditions, and with some astute kicking from Aedan and Blair, they enjoyed some good field position from which they kept the scoreboard ticking over. Two tries each from Aedan and Ross P with two of these converted by Blair was a healthy return from 30 minutes of hard work. However we struggled to cope with some of the wide running from Mackie; both their centres were excellent at putting the back three in to space, and as we fell off a few tackles we left the door open for the opposition to pretty much match our scoring in the first half.
The second-half was a different story. It started well with Aedan completing his hat-rick and Blair converting for a 31-24 lead, however thereafter it was backs-to-the-wall stuff for the boys as Mackie started to dominate up front.
We struggled to get the same effective line-speed that we had earlier in the game, and as the home side retained the ball well at each break-down, gaps eventually appeared. The boys were right in the game until the final ten minutes, when Mackie scored three quick unanswered tries to run out 52-31 winners.
The score-line flattered the opposition, and for much of the game Perth were every bit as good (if not better) in terms of their skills set. However there is no doubt that the home team had a significant edge in the forwards, and this eventually took it's toll as we struggled to match their physicality towards the end.
On reflecting back, there is much to be pleased about in the performance; some of the back moves were a joy to watch, the tackling at the ruck defence was improved, and the boys were starting to fill the field in the defensive alignment much more effectively.
Final Score: Mackie 52-31 Perthshire
Team: Euan, Daniel, Josh, Barnaby, Ruaraidh, Tom, Fin, Ross P, Aedan, Blair, Keir, Ross J, Scott, Jonathan, Alex S, Saul, Allan, Lewis, Noah
Man of the Match:
1. Aedan - not just for his three tries, but for his clever kicking into space with the wind and being a constant threat around the fringes
2. Ross P - carried the ball really well, taking out several defenders, and scores two excellent tries
3.Euan - really got stuck in against a big set of forwards, tackled well and was quick on claiming anything loose on the ground
