Boro Ladies Season 2017/18 Pre-season friendly v Towcester
On the first Sunday of September, Peterborough Ladies welcomed Towcester Ladies to Fortress Fengate for a pre-season friendly.*
Both sides had more than 15, and for Boro, a number of new Ladies making their debuts.
The match kicked off with the visitors applying pressure. The Boro defence looked up to the job, but cracked once and they conceded a try. This appeared to galvanise the Boro Ladies and they started to play some rugby. Nat was keeping the tempo high, and the tackles were hard (although a couple looked high to me sat in the stand - from both sides). However, our match official took a pragmatic approach, and allowed play to continue at 15-a-side. 0 - 5 at the end of the first quarter.
Boro continued in their good form, following a few changes from coach Rich, and their hard work paid off when Sarah W was able to score following good pressure form the forwards and hands from the backs. Skipper Mel was unsuccessful with the conversion. Half time Boro Ladies 5 Towcester Ladies 5.
The third quarter saw some more changes ensuring that everyone had a run out, and allowing options for different combinations. Boro should have extended their lead but the final ball either didn't go early enough or to hand. However, it was good to see the Ladies playing some good rugby this early in the season.
The final quarter saw the visitors back on the front foot with some last ditch defence keeping them out, until the final play of the game when they scored under the posts, with a successful conversion. A cruel way to lose the match.
Final score Peterborough Ladies 5 Towcester Ladies 12.
Thank you to Towcester for for the game, played in the right way, and our match official, Bruce Morley.
Coach Rich chose Becky and Bianca as his forward and back of the match, but everyone put their hand up.
Court was held, the theme was 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', and has been adjourned for the evening !
Great to see lots of supporters, old and new (including the very very young).
Onwards to the next game.
*There is no such thing as a friendly !
