Boro Dig Deep to Beat Coalville
On a glorious afternoon for rugby, Peterborough Ladies welcomed Coalville Ladies to Fortress Fengate. The hosts were looking to continue their good start to the season.
From the kick off, both teams looked to impose themselves, with big hits being the order of the day. It took ten minutes, but eventually, Boro were able to get the ball to Nicola in enough space for her to race to the line, arcing round the defence. It looked like Boro were up and running. However, from the restart, the ball wasn't claimed and Coalville had a lineout deep in the Boro half. From this, they worked through a number of phases before scoring. The visitors were now in the ascendancy and were playing all the rugby in the Boro half. But some great defence kept Coalville out, before good hands saw Nicola release Sarah (not angry), who manged to squeeze over in the corner in what was the final play of the half.

The second half saw Boro with the wind at their backs. They knew that Coalville would have to run the ball out from their 22 and set about keeping them there. Some great driving play allowed the backs to continue their excellent handling. Allied to their increasing support lines and it was Boro now camped in the opposition half. Some very slick handling, including an out of the back pop pass saw Sarah (not angry) score her second try. Shortly after, (angry) Sarah was able to finish off more good play. Coalville were fully committed and were challenging at every breakdown. However, Georgia was able to strike against the head in a number of scrums, allowing the backs more ball. Boro finally got a lead which allowed them to relax slightly when Meagan scored a try her play deserved, when she was able to finish off another fine move. The game finished shortly afterwards with the Boro defence holding strong.
Final Score Peterborough Ladies 25 Coalville Ladies 5.
Our thanks to Coalville for the game, played in an excellent spirit, and to our match official.
Coach Rich picked Meagan and Sarah (both ?) as his players of the match, but as usual, there were a lot of players putting themselves forward.
This week the bring-along was something for the harvest festival, and nice to see that everyone, including a fair amount of supporters had something.
Court, overseen by Judge Verity saw various miscreants roll the dice of (mis) fortune, with more crickets being consumed, as well as Nicola enjoying a piece of pickled turnip.
Three weeks until the next game, Scunthorpe away.
Apologies, no musical references, I got overly excited by the tagline ! Dig, Coal, geddit ?
