Old Northamptonians Ladies 5 Peterborough Ladies 46
Borough Ladies good start to league campaign continues (and Bambi is back).
Peterborough Ladies travelled to Northampton to play ONs in their second league match of the season.
From the outset, the Boro Ladies looked to assert themselves, particularly at the breakdown. Coach Parson’s rucking drills paid dividends as Boro were able to secure quick clean ball, which Nat made good use of. Playing downhill in the first half, the Boro ladies were able to score at regular intervals. The first try was scored by Georgie, following some good hands. The next was scored by Jess, spotting a gap in the defence. Next on the scoresheet was Steph, followed by Charlotte (who also converted) before the final score of the half, again scored by Jess, converted by Charlotte. It was a prime example of the saying "forwards win games, back decide by how much". The forwards were certainly doing their part, and so were the backs.
The second half proved to be an opportunity for Boro to show their defensive mettle. Deborah(Bambi) replaced Kat, who had to leave the field injured. Boro spent the first 15 minutes of the half tackling anyone in an ONs shirt, as the hosts were camped in the Boro 22, due to a mix of penalties and scrums. Eventually the home sides pressure paid off when they were able to score out wide. This just gave the Boro Ladies the resolve to get back on the front foot. You could not tell that they were playing uphill, as the whole team continued to bring the game to ONs, winning counter rucks and getting onto the front foot with turnover ball. Steph was on hand to score her second try of the match, ghosting through a gap to score under the posts, Charlotte getting the conversion. Boro continued to pile on the pressure, but is worth noting that the whole team showed some very good handling, finishing the match as they started, with Jess able to score another try.
Final Score ONs Ladies 5 Peterborough Ladies 46.
Our thanks to ONs for the match and our match official.
Coach Parsons picked Laura and Steph as his forward and back of the match, but it would have been a difficult decision.
The bring along was something to do with cardboard, but we left before things got too complicated.
The Ladies do not play for a few weeks, but training continues at Fortress Fengate, with lots to work on, but positives on a great start to their league campaign.
