6. Moore’s young Lions are so hungry for success

Chuffed chairman Andy Moore was full of praise for his hungry young Lions after another English Clubs Championship win at the weekend.

The Bretton-based club made it four wins out of four in Midlands Division One East (South) by overcoming Towcestrians 27-20.

But it was the way his side refused to buckle under second-half pressure that thrilled Moore most.

After turning round with a 22-5 advantage, the Lions dozed off in the September sunshine in the second half. Towcestrians had all the play and with 15 minutes to go had reduced the Lions’ lead to 22-20.

“Last season we would have wilted under such pressure,” said Moore. “We’d have been arguing amongst ourselves, our discipline would have gone and we’d have messed up.

“But on Saturday we showed great resilience and self-belief and that’s what won it for us. We’ve got a lot of young lads in the side now - six on Saturday were under 22 - and they are so hungry. They want to play and they want to win

“To beat a side as good as Towcestrians when you’re not at your best speaks volumes.”

John-Christian Sagoe settled the nerves in the closing stages with a breakaway try - his second of the match - that broke Towcestrians’ hearts.

Earlier tries came from Marc Rossouw and Laurent Ross to earn the Lions the bonus point.

On Saturday they welcome back powerful prop Tom Laws for a trip to Paviors.
