We formed a new Lions Under 14 squad at the start of last season. The bulk of our squad had previously played together at Peterborough Rugby Club, they are mixed in with some new additions, boys who had a taster of rugby at school and are playing club rugby for this first time this season.
As Head Coach, I cannot thank Peterborough Lions enough for the welcome they have extended to the boys, parents & coaches. The facilities are excellent, it already feels like home to us all.
Our boys are loving the whole Lions experience, those that have attended First XV home matches this season will have seen our Under 13’s on ball boy duties, and I know our parents have been enjoying Lions match day hospitality while the boys perform their duties on the side lines.
This season is all about change, not only are we at a new club & new surroundings, but the boys & coaches are adapting to significant changes to the rules from last season, having coached through mini and junior ranks I would compare the changes this season as on a par with the move from tag to contact, the changes this season include; -
• Much larger pitch (full pitch 5m in from goal line)
• 13 a side
• Competing scrums
• Longer playing time with 2x halves of 25 minutes
• There is also a 5-minute sin-bin thrown in for good measure!
The season started with an extended training period before our first match. The boys were working on their skills as well as fitness. Some of the boys were learning the game almost from scratch.
We have now played Leighton Buzzard, Oakham and Deeping . It is clear that the boys have come a long way, but more work is needed to compete fully for the full 50 minutes, but we will get there. We have a packed schedule of away fixtures leading up to Christmas.
We need your help Please!!
We have a great spirit within the whole Under 13s group, we have 14 registered active players and need as much help as we can get to achieve our goal of 20 players by the end of the season. So, we would really appreciate you spreading the message to family, friends, colleagues.
We are looking for players in School Year 8, ideally that have played before either at a club, or at school. We train on Tuesday evenings at The Den, (start 6.30 prompt), we play or train on Sunday mornings. We have a team of 5 coaches supporting the boys, emphasis is on player development, fun and safety of course.
It remains for me, on behalf of the players, coaches and parents to thank Lions for making us feel at home so quickly, good luck to Lions first XV this season let’s hope they achieve their goal of promotion!
