To accommodate the extra numbers Alton and the referee agreed to play three 25 minute periods.

In perfect conditions the game was a spectacle of open running Rugby in which both teams and the young referee contributed. As it turned out Alton were just too strong for the Mustangs on the day and they took some measure of revenge for Petersfield’s victory over Alton in the Hampshire U17 Plate Final.

The game started at a ferocious pace with Alton on the attack but the home team held out with some stern defence before breaking out themselves with some strong running by number eight Briggs. It was end to end stuff before Alton decided to take the penalty points on offer when the home field transgressed.

Petersfield went back on the attack and finally scored when Guy ‘Charlie’ Wilson charged down an attempted clearance before kicking on and diving over to score. Dryden converted the kick to give the Mustangs a slender lead.

The second period was much the same as the first with end to end Rugby; but Alton soon got the upper hand and scored four good tries through their backs with the ball being moved sweetly through the hands and their wings scoring out wide.

The Mustangs rallied in the last period and pressurized the Alton line but to no avail as the defensive wall kept them out. Alton even broke out of their own 22’ and scored a length of the field try. The Mustangs huffed and puffed for the rest of the game but, on the day, nothing fell down.

It was a great day for Rugby and pleasing for the coaches as the Mustangs managed to play a total of 24 players; including U16s Kieran Harrington and Sam Beesley. They also welcomed newcomer Harley Orr who made his debut in the centre.
