Petersfield 2nd XV narrowly lose out to Winchester ....
... conceding a late try.
Petersfield hosted and were quick to apply pressure to their opposition from the outset. The first quarter saw Winchester pretty much camped in their own half. Fifteen minutes in and Field finally managed to release the wings with Kieran Gericke wrapping around to finally dot the ball in the corner.
The visitors made their way back into the game employing their forwards to good effect and with their large number 8 to make some hard yards and drain energy from their counter-parts. Eventually they were to score under the posts and convert. A scrappy period of play ensued with both sides making some basic handling errors and spawned opportunities but a gap appeared and Aaron Keast was able to take advantage and run half the length of the pitch to put Field ahead again and stick the ball through the posts for the extras.
After half time it was evident Winchester were winning most of the arm wrestles at the break down despite some strong contests in the same. Both sides had opportunities that were not taken ..line outs not hitting the mark and the handling errors perhaps indicative of it being the first league match of the season.
A very committed performance from the reds (hosts) resulted in 3 injuries and Winchester were able to draw level . Valiant efforts saw Field hold up a certain try under the posts close to the end of the match but a yellow card left the home side depleted and Winchester pressed to go ahead for the first time. Field had a few good opportunities near the death but knock on’s and a penalty gave the experienced Visitors a chance to see the game out.
Field can be pleased with great commitment from very player on the park and the newly arrived ex-colts to the team did well; in particular Rob Wands who was man of the match .. Final score Field 12 - Winchester 17.
