Colts Pipped by Last Gasp Tadley
On a cold windy day Petersfield Colts took on Tadley in the first fixture of the new year.
Petersfield did not start well, making too many mistakes, which were capitalised upon by a Tadley side going forward and scoring a converted try after 4 min.
This did seem to shake Petersfield from their post Xmas slumbers and they started to put together good phase play breeching the gain line and moving he ball well. Sustained pressure on the Tadley line resulted in Wild opening the home sides account 5- 7.
Against the run of play the Tadley centres made a break and a lovely offload out of the tackle to restore their lead 5-14. Back came ‘field 2 mins later to cut the deficit when Blackwell cut through the midfield to score a well worked try converted by Keast 12-14.
Petersfield then had a sustained period of pressure where opportunities were squandered on a number of occasions as the home side failed to execute simple handling. Petersfield finally did convert that pressure when Samengo burst through from the breakdown to score a quality try on his debut leaving the scores 17- 14 at the half time interval.
The first ten minutes of the second half saw Petersfield playing with the strong wind and shading the battle for territory without really threatening the Tadley line. An injury to a Tadley player saw the match moved to another pitch to aid treatment (we can report that the player is fine) and this seemed to take the wind out of the home sides sails such that they started to miss the first up tackles and Tadley took full advantage to score a good try off a chip through 17- 19. Once again this seemed to spur Field to life and Wild scored his second to regain the lead 22-19.
Petersfield then seemed to lose their structure and played with one up runners with no support and poor body position at the breakdown which allowed Tadley to get territorial dominance. When the home side infringed with 8 minutes remaining Tadley were able to level the scores with a penalty 22-22.
The last minutes saw a good tussle with opportunities to score falling to both sides – Tribe at full back made a fabulous touchline tackle on the Tadley left wing to prevent a certain score and an off load out of a tackle when forward with the line beckoning for Renwick Gray. As full time approached Petersfield were playing in the wrong part of the pitch and when they fell foul of the offside line the excellent Tadley kicker with the last act of the game snatched victory with a fine strike 22-25 to Tadley.
An exciting game played in the right manner by both side, none the less this was a frustrating performance from Petersfield Colts; good individually and excellent when they execute their team structures and work together, they strayed off plan too many times and missed too many first up tackles.
That said it good to welcome Hughes, Renwick Gray, Crosdil , Caines (first Colts games of the season) and Mackintosh King (injury) and Samengo on his debut. Man of the match goes to Wild.
