Huntington Under 10s 1 Pickering Pikes Under 10s 1

Pikes welcomed back Jack Cleary to the squad in this early morning encounter at the Hopgrove Fields in a fixture that usually becomes a tight affair. It appeared to be no different with the ball toing and throwing from box to box with defence coming out on top. Midway through the opening half the home side won a free kick when David Hebron was adjudged to have made a late tackle from behind on a Huntington player. From the resultant free kick, the home team took the lead. However, this was short-lived, as from the re-start, Pikes pressed forward with Cleary winning a corner off an opposing defender. Thomas Horsley, in the absence of regular set-piece taker, Oliver Stanton, whipped in the corner kick for Cleary to get a deft touch and although the keeper grasped the ball in his hands, in doing so, he was adjudged, by the referee, well placed, to have carried the ball over his line. Cleary was then put through by Horsley, only to hook his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat.

Thomas Warriner replaced Cleary after the interval, and Lotfi Berkesh came on for Dan Ray, who had run tierlessly throughout the 1st half. Again the game began tight, however Pikes seemed to be winning the midfield battle and both Charlie Monkman and Finlay Johnson mopped up anything that fell in their path and thus began attack after attack on the home goal. Good running from Hebron, whipped in corners from Horsley and long throws from Berkesh were now threatening and Pikes were winning the second balls in the middle of the park. Indeed after a great run from Hebron, the young Pike was so unlucky to see his effort pushed wide and Horsley shot wide of the post when well placed. In an effort to grab a late winner, Cleary was re-introduced to the fold but both teams had to settle for a well battled draw.

Hats off to the Pikes, they conceeded, got straight back on level terms and not only defended as a team to ensure they got something from the game, pressed for a winner in a game that 6 months ago, they could quite easily have lost! Great team performance, again improvement today in everyone. Not forgetting our keeper Thomas Pickering who’s handling and kicking throughout the game was excellent.

Team Thomas Pickering, Charlie Monkman, Finlay Johnson, Daniel Ray, David Hebron, Thomas Horsley, Jack Cleary, Thomas Warriner, Lotfi Berkesh, Ben Hugill, Alex Vasey, Simon Dymond
