A chilly start to the morning today following the Summer like weather over the last few days. Due to the rescheduling of the match we lost a couple of our previously selected boys, but how rewarding to see the commitment of our boys so that we still turned up with a Team
of 8. Without Nate, Dhruve had kindly taken on the goalie position, fast becoming our preferred second keeper, and without Noah we had gone for Jason as Sweeper, Jake and Alejandro as defensive midfield, Steve as attacking midfield and Ali and Kian up front. With no expectations we set off in fine form and within 5 minutes Jason took a great free kick ending up in the back of the net, swiftly followed by a corner from Steve that with a little accidental nudge from the opposition, took us to 2-0 within 10 minutes of the game. Springfield felt under pressure but they are at the top of the division for good reason. Displaying some great skills and keeping their heads, they gradually pushed their way through the defence and popped in 4 goals before the half time whistle. Franky had joined us by then and was able to be subbed for Jake. The second half then saw each Team
player taking 5 mins for the Team
so that everyone had a chance to play in their final match of the season. We couldn't rise to the challenge though on this occasion; the boys fought well and it looked likely that we could hold the match at 5-2 but tired legs and a lack of belief set in, and despite our convincing start and some great tackling the match ended at 8-2, putting Springfield in the number one spot as Division 6 winners. Both coaches and both Managers though were so impressed by our boys and by the winners. A good game of football, played precisely as it should be at this level: with a fair and friendly referee, lovely boys, lots of encouragement and support and zero derogatory remarks. An encouraging end to the season. We've had some surprising losses, some deserved losses, a great win and 2 draws of great football, a mixed bag this Phase but all the boys are still smiling. Thanks to the parents for their support, to our wonderful coach for everything he has done and of course to our boys, who I hope will we see again next season for the next challenge of 11 a side.
