History

Plumpton Rugby Football Club was founded in 1967 by Roy Ford Esq. The club evolved from Plumpton Senior Scout Group who with Roy Ford's guidance formed the nucleus of the club. The first game in the club's history was against the students of Plumpton Agricultural College on November 27th 1967. The colour of the shirts was decided to be the same as the Senior Scout Movement, which was maroon.

The club then went on to find a pitch and facilities suitable for rugby in Plumpton, it was decided that there was not enough space at the village playing fields. Then an opportunity for the club arose at Plumpton Racecourse, where the manager at the racecourse Ian Middleton (a club member) negotitated an area in the centre of the course for a pitch. The pitch is regarded as one of the best in Sussex, as it is naturally free-draining and has very rarely caused cancellation of a fixture.

This is now the club's permanent home, with a club house and bar adjoining to the changing and showering facilities in the centre course bar. In the club's history there have been some highs and lows, one such high was the 1987/88 season when the club played 33 games winning 30 of them on their way to the 'Sussex Merit Table C'. In recent times the 2004/05 season was another high when the club won the 'Sussex League 3 Central' and the 'Sussex Plate', a great achievement for the club. As with all sporting organizations there have been low times, the club has managed to survive those testing seasons and now celebrates over 50 years of Rugby at the racecourse, playing their finest rugby to date.
