Nine 9s serve up double birthday treat

by Phil Gilbank

Captain Alex Hindle led out our nine man team against Malton after the Christmas break. The Pocklington boys gelled quickly with some good tackling and strong defensive play by Louis Eccles and Tom Brown. With a 0-0 draw at half time there was nothing to lose and no subs to come on against some fresh Malton players. In the second half Pocklington took control with barnstorming runs by Max Lee supported strongly in the rucks by Ollie Mercer. A number of flowing manoeuvres led to space for Harry Jones to score the first try. Pocklington followed with a second try to clinch this 2-0 victory.

An unchanged Poc side faced a new Malton team and were put on the backfoot from the start and Malton scored their first try. The Pock team roared back with a number of strong runs by Joseph Ward supported by Harry Scutt. Our rucking was led by Alex Hindle, pushing Malton on to the back foot. As the team gathered momentum there were a number of passing moves between Harry Scutt, Louis Eccles and Josh Jenkins. Great mauling and ripping by Max Lee led to Pock's first try on the stroke of half time. Pocklington were on the attack in the second half with all the boys still giving 100% for the team. A strong run by Max Lee drove Pock up to the try line with the ball being recycled well by Ollie Mercer and Alex Hindle. A quick pass from Tom Brown at scrum half to Harry Jones resulted in a try in the final play of the game to give Pock a 2-1 victory. After the match the boys celebrated and sang Happy Birthday to coach Steve Jenkins!
