Malton & Norton 24 Pocklington Pilgrims 15

Another great game at Malton saw the Pilgrims give their best display of the season so far, but it was not quite enough to take an epic encounter.

Malton soaked up all the early Pilgrim pressure from strong running by Tom 'Teddy' Chapman and sniping breaks from Mikey Davies at scrum half. After being on the defensive for a quarter of an hour Malton then hit back with a back try to open the scoring. The Pilgrims responded with tenacity as a series of pick and go's tied in the opposition and James Lindsay ran in a try from a good distance out. Fly half Justin Brosenitz converted and followed up with a penalty shortly after, but Malton evened the score for half time at 10-10 with another unconverted try again against the run of play.

The Pilgrims made interval changes to give all the squad a good run out and probably lost a little order in doing so. Young vice captain Jack Helme took charge and did a good job until injury stopped him, while youngsters Jamie Nicholson, Sam Wright, Sam Crabbe and Sam Knight stood out with their enthusiasm and determination, while Tim Hughe's return added guile and experience.

Chapman scored us a lovely try in the far corner and the Pilgrims continued to press hard. However, a couple of late injuries were followed by a little lack of organisation that saw Malton's hooker score from close range. The home backs then combined to score again with three minutes to go, and though the Pilgrims kept going to the end they were unable to get back on terms.
