Pocklington Pilgrims 22 Withernsea 12

The Pilgrims fielded a makeshift side at the weekend to face Withernsea at Kilwick Park. Several of the regular back line were unavailable which meant regular centre Tom Chapman had to fill-in at fly half, accompanied by a centre partnership of forwards Rob Atherton and vice Captain Jack Helme.

With temperatures hovering around freezing, numb fingers and slippery conditions made the opening exchanges scrappy, with niether side dominating territory. Some tactical kicking from the Withernsea backs tested the Pock back three on numerous occassions, but level heads and good decision making from fullbak James Lindsay and wing Sam Knight steadied the ship and allowed the forwards to gain some momentum.

Dominant scrummaging and a good passage of possession midway through the first half was rewarded when prop Dan Elvidge charged over to score the opening try. Scrum half Nial Quin addedd the extras from the tee. However, unable to keep the momentum, Pock succummed to a try when the Withernsea pack put the shove on to win a scrum against the head, their backs reacting quickly to score and level the match with a converted try before half time.

The home side regrouped at the interval and started the second half with better lineout retention, exellent pick-and-go plays from the forwards and solid defensive work from the backs. Tom Chapman and Rob Atherton gave the Pilgrims forwards the territory with strong runs from midfield, while back rows Tim Johnson and Paul Rhodes both saw the try line from the back of rolling mauls, each dotting down to take the score to 17 - 7 by the midway point of the second half.

Rob Atherton's sterling performance was then rewarded with a try under the posts to take the score to 22 - 7 and seemingly beyond the visitors. Withernsea however, showed good spirit in the last few minutes and were rewarded with a try in the last play of the game when their fullback narrowly beat seasoned prop Jerry Mooney to the line.
