Records crowds came to Ponteland to compete in and watch the Annual Wheelbarrow Races on New Year's Day

2018 saw the tightest finish for many years in the open race with Richard & James Leiper just holding off Callumm and Jack Johnson in a time of 6 minutes 47 seconds - 9 seconds quicker than their winning time last year. Mark Turnbull and Julian Goodhall came third in a time of 6 minutes 52 seconds. This is the first time for many years that there have been three sub 7 minutes times in one race.

Rob Laverick and Woody coming in 4th improved upon their previous year's time by 26 seconds. Multi winning Wheelbarrow Race veteran Alan Redman came in 6th with son number 3 Gregor. Dan Harrison and Craig Robinson continued the improved personal times coming 8th in 7 minutes 59 seconds - the first time they've cracked 8 minutes !

Not far behind were Luke Chick and Mark Hughes in 9th position. More improved times were to come Adam Lawson and Courtney West coming in 13th in a time of 9 minutes 30 seconds. Chris and Owen Freer weren't far behind, but a full second slower than their time in 2017 ! Another father and son combination, John and Elliott Mew finished 16th with John in combat attire and carrying full kit.

Regular entrant Chris Morgan, this time partnered by family member Julian Aredez Diaz came in 20th in 10 minutes 20 seconds closely followed by 1st time entrant Lee Durham and Kamran Aziz.

The only significantly slower time recorded was that of the Mark Kelly and John Chappell team. Complete in fancy dress and having recorded 11 minutes 50 seconds in 2017, the ravages of time having certainly taken their toll coming in this year in a time of 13 minutes 12 seconds - a full 1 minute 32 seconds slower ! However, this is not a record.

As usual the tail once brought up by David Richardson and Claire Richardson with the kitchen sink. Well done with all your charitable efforts !
