Portishead travelled to Hutton a team placed a league above them for the first round in the Atwell shield.
The game kicked off and Portishead were dominant creating chances galore, with Danny Fowler and Steve Lafford combining well up front with their work rate and skill. Portishead were undone however when a long ball forward and a defensive mix up saw the Hutton winger race clear and square the ball to the striker for an easy tap in.
1-0 Hutton
This slip up did not dent Portisheads spirits and they continued to push forward. A lovely break from right back saw the player beat two men before delivering a low cross to Fowler who confidently netted.
1-1
Portisheads tails were up and they continued to push forward, Steve lafford went close after receiving the ball form a throw he brilliantly turned his man with millimetres of space between the defender and the goal line before hitting the post from the tightest of angles.
Portishead then decided to blow up! First they conceded a corner after Ryan Owen put the hutton striker through on goal, then from the resulting corner the ball was half cleared and the Hutton midfielder guided the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box!
2-1 Hutton
Portishead continued to push forward but kept giving the ball away cheaply, Huttons third came from a free kick after more sloppy play from Portishead. The Hutton man stepped up and curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner.
3-1 Hutton
From the kick off the portishead right back gave the ball away to the lively Hutton winger who then bamboozled Adam Stewart with a drop of the shoulder before riffling past Cope!
4-1 Hutton
I actually can’t remember Huttons 5 goal but i am pretty sure Portishead were to blame.
5-1 Hutton
30 minutes gone and it looked like Portishead were going out of their second cup in as many weeks.
Cue the fight back.
Portishead who still looked lively up front earned a throw in deep inside the Hutton half, Derrick threw to Lafford who turned his man and laid the ball into Nick Walker who swept his shot in to the opposite top hand corner, Walker keeping up his goal scoring form even when shifted to wide midfield.
5-2 Hutton
Just before the re-start Danny Fowler lifted the team with the shout “ Come on lads who ever scores the most is going to win this match” Wisdom.
The game kicked off and Portishead started to dominate, Owen and Derrick getting their act together in midfield combined brilliantly before Derrick was maliciously bought down by the Hutton centre back (good looks in tact he rose to his feet and dusted himself off)
Fowler stepped up to take the kick and bamboozled the keeper by perfectlky judging the deflection off the wall, sending him the wrong way as the ball trickled into the net.
5-3 Hutton and half time.

The second half kicked off and immediately Portishead took the game to Hutton, who couldn’t break down the Portishead defence who had dramatically improved and the front four of Fowler, Lafford, Gullespie and Walker were causing havoc.
Portisheads pressure told when they won a corner, like Huttons second the ball was half cleared, the ball fell to Owen on the edge of the box who volleyed past all the defenders and Posset players into the bottom corner.
5-4 Hutton
It was clear Hutton were nervous and Portishead continued pressing for goals, the vital equaliser came when Derrick received the ball from Owen in the middle, he swivelled past his marker before travelling toward the edge of the box, and unleashing a beautiful effort! It dipped and turned, meaning no keeper in the world could have prevented it nestling in what was clearly the top corner.
5-5
After the equaliser Portishead took their foot off the gas as the last 15 mins got very tense with no side wishing to concede, Portisheads defence was brilliant and held on taking the game into extra time.
Extra time
Portishead were visibly tired their freshest player being the only sun Bendall, who during extra time put himself around the park, gathering loose balls and creating half chances. The crucial first goal came when Owen worked with Fowler to get though on goal, the defender got between Owen and the keeper, but with a slight nudge Owen managed to push his marker into the keeper and get a toe on the ball! The free scoring Nick Walker was Johnny on the spot and rolled the ball into the empty net. The referee consulted with the linesman before the gaol was given.
5-6 Portishead (Finally in front)
The first half ended with no more chances, the second half began with Posset determined to hang on for the win! And Fowler could’ve made life easier when he collected the ball in the box and evaded his marker brilliantly! With the keeper stranded all he had to do was square the ball to Owen for an easy goal, but his eyes lit up at the prospect of a heroic hattrick and he fired wide from a tight angle.
Portishead had to endure some hairy moments, but with the defence and Cope working well along with Derrick who by this time was an extra centre back as he could not run, they held on to the lead.
The goal then came which took the game beyond Hutton, Bendall received the ball on the edge of the box, he lifted it over the defenders head before trying to control, the ball hit his knee his head and his other knee before finding its way to Fowler who swivelled and volleyed, completing his Hattr9ick in style.
5-7 Portishead.
Portishead battled brilliantly and progress to the next round.

Man of the match: Dan Fowler and Mike Derrick.
