Duncan Clement

A number of Portobello FP RFC past and present paid their respects to Duncan on Tuesday 20th December at Mortonhall.

The Club was well represented this morning with a number of players and Committee past and present paying respect to Duncan's life.

Ali Donald gave his appreciation of over 60 years friendship which was well delivered and well received.

Portobello FP Rugby Football Club were shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Past President, Duncan Clement (72) on Friday 9th December.

Duncan is a President was more than that -
There will be many of today's Club who are not familiar with the name or the person - Duncan Clement - but, what glues this Club together today - the Clubhouse - is testimony to the inspiration and determination of Duncan who led the project from start to finish. Portobello Rugby's gain was The Lady Nairne's loss.

Duncan was an intelligent player (Captain 1962-1963 and 1965-1966), Committee man and President from Season 1976-1977 to 1979-1980 - respected by all. Despite a foray (a committed foray too) into Bowls which saw him become Secretary of Gorebridge Bowling Club, Duncan remained faithful to rugby and Porty and attended most Porty home games - most recently against Preston Lodge on 26 November as well as Edinburgh and Scotland's International matches.

No-one was more saddened by the fire which ripped through the club in 2007 but doubtful anyone was more delighted with the outturn of the revamped club.

Our deepest condolences to Mary, Colin, Margaret, Lesley and Karen.

I am very deeply saddened by the news of the passing of my old friend and Portobello stalwart, Duncan Clements.

Although I am a lifetime member of the Broughton Club, I grew up with Duncan at Royal Park where we were near neighbours. Duncan was my patrol leader at 4th Portobello Scouts and I have been priviledged to have his friendship since earliest childhood, now more than 60 years ago.

We had a wee crack as he sat on his shooting stick at Cavalry Park 2 weeks ago and although in some discomfort he still had the old twinkle in his eyes.

Please accept my sincere condolences and pass on my warmest regards to Mary and all of the family.

Portobello have indeed lost one of it's finest!

I only heard when it was too late to contribute early enough. What a sad loss to his family and the rugby club. Being a participant in the game that the photo represents fills me with many happy memories of Duncan, both playing with him in the fighting 4ths as a 17 year old out against the "Hairy Tw*ts", being driven round in the Renault 'team bus' he had, and all the years i was at the club.
