Pompey win the league after victory over West Ham

Joy and celebrations as its mission acomplished for Portsmouth

Portsmouth FC ladies can finally say WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, after the club won the FA Women's premier league southern division on Sunday following a 3-1 victory over West ham United Ladies at Privett Park.

A huge crowd was expectant at Gosport and the home side set out on the front foot right from the start, Gemma Hillier was proving to be a real handful to the visiting defence early on, a cross from the right was headed just wide by Hillier seven minutes in. Pompey continued to push forward early on and as another cross came in a defender jumped in front with an arm raised, as the ball struck the arm the referee straight award pointed to the penalty spot, SARAH KEMPSON once again stepped up and slotted the ball coolly past the goal keeper much to the relief of the crowd.

The atmosphere was still at fever pitch as the game wore on, Sadie Blakey drew gasps as she produced a fine one on one save after a pass back from Nadine Bazan was quickly seized upon by an attacker, the shot was hard and Blakley had to receive treatment but Blakley was ok and was able to continue. After that scare Portsmouth attacked once again, JESS FRAMPTON received the ball on the half way line and as she progressed forward she shot from thirty yards out, Nikki Duncan in goal was left with no chance as the ball flew past her and into the net leaving Frampton To run away and celebrate wildly.

The two goal lead became three on thirty seven minutes, good work from Charley Wilson the right wing meant the ball was crossed low into GEMMA HILLIER who was able to tap the ball home from close range and the players and staff could scarcely believe the title was within their grasp.

Five minutes remained of the half when West ham were awarded a free kick deep into Pompey territory, the kick was launched deep and Blakey could only push the ball onto the bar, STACEY LITTLE was on hand to finish the job and reduce the deficit to two goals.

As the second half got underway it quickly became clear that Portsmouth were happy to preserve their lead rather than look for more goals as the game very quickly settled in to a midfield battle, the ball did finally reach the West Ham danger zone but Duncan produced a wonderful save when Frampton was clear thorough on goal. The Hammers were struggling to provide any real attacking intent into he second period and Duncan had to be alert once again as she save at point blank range at the feet of Hillier to produce the save of the match.

With the crowd counting the seconds down the roar went up at 3:51 PM as the final whistle went to draw the game to a close and inure that Portsmouth had done more than what was needed in securing the three points that sealed the league title
