The Scholars are proud to say that our U18 Squad travelled to Barcelona for the International Cup and played against various teams from Spain and other European countries, over the weekend of 20th -22nd July. The squad came up against various academy teams made up of older players up to the age of 19 and consider our team are 16 year olds they did very well.
The team played some very attractive football and received plenty of compliments from the opposition team managers and locals. They did so well that they made it through to the final of the competition where they played Gimnastic de Tarragona U19s a category 1 Spanish academy.
With 10 mins of the match to go and the scores still level at 0-0, the scholars were denied a penalty by the spanish referee and whilst we were still questioning the decision they broke up the field and scored. 1-0. The boys pushed for the equaliser and again deja vu struck again, we were denied another penalty and got hit on the sucker punch again on the break. 2-0. So the team ended up losing 2-0, but showed how good english teams can play football.
The team have been invited back to Spain to train with one of the top academies and two clubs Villarreal and Espanol, mentioned that they are interested in offering 2 players trials.
